These are the edition's working notes, published as they were written. They record, work by work, where Migne's plate is defective or the reading uncertain: the printed form, what the English does with it, and why. They are not a groomed apparatus. Where a note argues with itself, withdraws an earlier decision, or leaves a question open, that is the record of how the reading was actually reached, and it is left standing — a conjecture that is visible can be checked, and one that has been tidied away cannot.
The English never silently repairs the page. A construable but wrong reading is rendered literally and the conjecture is recorded here, never applied to the text. How the English is produced and checked →

WORK-WIDE CONVENTIONS (authoritative)
- Speaker tags Bishop. / Cleric. (Wilson, 2026-10-05). Running-text ἀρχιερεύς = "bishop" for the officiating/consecrating bishop, "high priest" for Christ. ἀρχιερωσύνη = the episcopate; ἀρχιερατικός = episcopal. Title On the Sacred Rites (Wilson approved, 2026-10-05).
- μυστήριον = mystery · τελετή = rite · the seven: baptism · chrism · communion · ordination · marriage · repentance · holy oil · ἁγιάζειν sanctify / καθαγιάζειν hallow.
- μύρον = "myron" (plural μύρα in the Luke 7 anointing also "myron"), kept distinct from χρίσμα = "chrism" — Symeon's gloss τὸ χρίσμα, ἤτοι τὸ μύρον needs two words. Reconciled at merge: stint A had "ointment" (22 sites in 0001–0004, swept to "myron"); B and C chose "myron" independently. μυροβλύτης (Demetrius) = "myrrh-streaming", the established epithet.
- εὐχέλαιον = oil of prayer · ἀνάδοχος = sponsor · ἐμφυσᾶν = breathe upon (≠ ἐμπνεῖν inbreathe) · ἀποταγή renunciation / συνταγή joining · προσκυνεῖν = do obeisance · θυσιαστήριον = altar · ἱερουργία / ἱερουργεῖν = celebration / celebrate · ἐνανθρώπησις = becoming man · σχῆμα = habit · πολιτεία = conduct of life · Θεάδελφος = the Brother of God.
- ✅ RULED (Wilson, 2026-10-06): ἐξομολόγησις = "confession", ἐξαγόρευσις = "declaration" (ἐξαγορεῦσαι = "declare"). Two sites changed: 0000 ch.39 "the declaring of one's faults", 0003 col 193 "concerning repentance and declaration". (ἀνθομολογεῖσθαι / ἀνομολογεῖν "confess" unchanged.)
- ✅ Also confirmed by Wilson 2026-10-06: rubrical τρίτον = "three times" (standing rule); μύρον = "myron" distinct from chrism; col 213 crucifixum stays unmarked (compression).
- Chapter heads CHAPTER n. arabic, read off the plate (Calfa garbles the letter-numerals: ΝΑʹ→ΝΔʹ, ΜΔʹ→ΜΛʹ, ΜΘʹ→ΑΙΘʹ). No speaker tag is supplied after a head where the plate has none.
- Iassy bold page numbers 62–86 placed throughout; Calfa lost or garbled every one.

Merge-level findings
- Calfa drops text in two places the plate makes visible: full-width Greek lines (pp.118–123) and column-final lines. Restored in the English from the plate, nine runs in all (A: col 188, 201; B: col 201 Lk 9:62, col 217/220 ἀποτα|γήν; C: col 225 ×2, 228, 229, 232). These are plate-verified
data/calfa-patches/candidates; one carries a negative (col 225, εἰ μή). [lat:]fired: 10 (A 2 · B 4 · C 4). The sharpest: col 212 (Greek: a careful priest present; Latin: abest … sacerdos) and col 229 (ἀποκαλύπτεται ‖ abscondit). Both go to the blind read for a second look.[lat:]declined at merge — B's borderline 0213 σαρκωθέντα ‖ crucifixum: the Greek goes on at once "and suffered in the flesh", so a reader of the Latin learns no different fact — compression, not divergence. Declined (agrees with stint B). B's 0217 ἐξέλασον ‖ Exi also stays declined (a prayer re-voiced as an exorcistic command; same act).[sic:]: 2 — col 189D χειρονοτονηθείς (A), col 212 ερωτάτου (B), both zoom-confirmed on the plate.[d:]: 1 — col 184C doubled line (A). BeforeenglishState: ours, these columns' reads must be entered indata/plate-reads.json(plate-gate).- Every plate page 93–123 was opened (PLATE-READS tsvs 0001/0005/0009 + the anchor's four); no footnotes, note markers, or apparatus anywhere in the work.
- EN/Greek ratios 1.26–1.40 (anchor 1.39); the Greek counts are inflated by Calfa junk.

Cols 0176–0181 (PG 155). Every plate page of the chunk was opened (PDF pp. 96–99 = raw/pg155-plates/calfa{93,94,95,96}_*.png), Greek column read whole, foot and gutter checked. No footnotes, no note markers, no editor's apparatus on any of the four pages. Band letters recorded as [b: X] where the gutter prints them (col 176: D · 177: A B C D · 180: A B C D · 181: A B; C of 181 falls in chunk 0001). Latin twin consulted for every paragraph (§6 pass); findings below.
Plate findings (the plate against our Greek source)
- Heading restored as
[ed:]at the chunk head: the plate sets ΠΕΡΙ ΤΩΝ ΙΕΡΩΝ ΤΕΛΕΤΩΝ / DE SACRAMENTIS across both columns (col 175–176, between the Dialogus' last paragraph and the High Priest's reply). Calfa has no trace of it. Nicetas precedent (ΛΟΓΟΣ ΠΡΩΤΟΣ). - Two chapter subtitles Calfa dropped, restored as
[ed:]: ΚΕΦΑΛ. ΛΔʹ Περὶ βαπτίσματος (col 177) and ΚΕΦΑΛ. ΛΘʹ Περὶ μετανοίας (col 180). Every other chapter in the chunk (ΛΓʹ, ΛΕʹ, Λϛʹ, ΛΖʹ, ΛΗʹ, Μʹ, ΜΑʹ) has its subtitle in Calfa and it is translated inline. - Bold arabic numerals
62(col 177, before ΚΕΦΑΛ. ΛΔʹ) and63(col 180, before ΛΘʹ) are the Iassy 1683 edition's page numbers, which Migne carries in bold in the Greek column (Wolbero/Gravius precedent: kept verbatim, bold). Calfa lost62entirely and OCR'd63asΚΘ. English prints 62 / 63 at the plate positions. - Junk run inside the Greek stream at col 179→180 (
ΚΟΝΡΟΤ Οε οὐγίεναίε. [αοιε οἰ. … Ρα ρΦκἱηα) is Calfa reading the Latin column's CAPUT XXXVIII. De matrimonio and page-foot matter mid-word (καταστησάμε|νος). Dropped silently; not indropCalfaLinesbecause it is not a whole line. The word καταστησάμενος is confirmed on the plate.
Readings decided at the plate (silent corrections, Calfa damage — ladder row 1)
All confirmed against the plate, not only against the Latin: Γίνωσκε · εἶπον · μόνῳ · εὐχαριστοῦμεν · σωφρονεῖν · ΚΕΦΑΛ. (for ΚΕΗΑΛ.)
Genuine cruces
- 0180 κρειττόνω(ς). Calfa
κρειττόνω,; the plate's last letter is worn — reads as κρειττόνω with a possible final ς. Grammar wants the adverb κρειττόνως ("in a better manner"); Latin nobiliores … modo ("in a nobler manner") concurs with the adverbial sense. Rendered "in a better manner." Not a[sic:]: the plate is worn, not wrong, and the letter is undecidable on this copy. Second-witness candidate if another PG 155 scan is ever harvested. - 0179 ἀναλαμβανόμενος ἀφ᾽ ἡμῶν. Literal "taking up this power of his from us" — the sense is that he assumed it from our side, as man, and then bestowed it through his priesthood. Rendered "having taken up this power of his from among us." Latin here is OCR-broken (pro nobis illa potentia … nobis eam sui ope exhibet) and settles nothing.
- 0181 Clerk's question ends in a COMMA on the plate (δι᾽ ἀγγέλου,) — Calfa agrees; the Latin prints a question mark. Pattern 8: the English keeps the comma. Not a
[lat:](punctuation is not a fact asserted). - 0176 δι᾽ ὑμᾶς … ὑμῖν (plural) vs 0177 σοι/Σύ (singular) inside one speech: Pattern 17 carried as printed — "for your sake … to you", then "to thee … do not thou". The High Priest addresses the body of clergy, then the one asking. Not smoothed.
Pattern 16 pass (Latin twin, every paragraph)
Nothing material fired. Candidates examined and declined:
- Ch. 33 list: the twin reads Baptismus, Chrisma, Ordo, Matrimonium, Poenitentia, et Oleum — SIX, no Communio. The twin's OCR dropped a word at a line break (the plate's Latin column has Communio at col 178, read on the plate). Not a divergence; a crop artifact (Pattern 16's "truncated Latin crop" caveat, worked instance).
- χειροτονία ‖ Ordo / impositio manuum — Allatius' rendering of one term two ways; looseness, no marker.
- libenter mortui sumus ‖ ἀπεθάνομεν ἑκουσίως — agree.
- Quare … vel per angelum non poterat? ‖ comma-ending Greek question — see above. Paragraphs where the pass found nothing at all: 0176 reply, ch. 34–36, ch. 38, ch. 40–41, the closing Trinity/Word paragraph.
Conventions set by this anchor (→ translation-style.md, "Catechetical-liturgical exposition")
μυστήριον = mystery (never "sacrament" — that is the Latin column's word; the work's own title says τελεταί) · τελετή = rite · the fixed seven: βάπτισμα baptism · χρίσμα chrism · κοινωνία communion · χειροτονία ordination · γάμος marriage · μετάνοια repentance · ἔλαιον ἅγιον holy oil · σφραγίς = seal · χάρισμα = gift · ἱερωσύνη = priesthood · Δεσπότης (of Christ) = Master; δέσποτα (to the bishop) = master · Ἀρχιερεύς. / Κληρικός. speaker tags → Bishop. / Cleric. (RULED by Wilson 2026-10-05: Bishop; originally drafted High Priest.) in italics as printed (ἀρχιερεύς = "high priest" per Wilson's 2026-09-24 ruling on 7091; ⚑ flag for Wilson: in Symeon the speaker is the bishop, and "Hierarch"/"Bishop" are the scholarly alternatives — one word, work-wide, decide before chunk 0001) · ΚΕΦΑΛ. xʹ → CHAPTER n. arabic (Oecumenius precedent), Ὅτι-subtitles "That …", Περὶ-subtitles "On …" · Iassy bold page numbers kept bold · scripture as printed in « » · διπλοῦς = twofold · κατ᾽ εἰκόνα = "according to the image" · ἀναγεννᾶν = regenerate · ἁγιάζειν = sanctify, καθαγιάζειν = hallow (two verbs, two words).

Cols 0181C–0201 (PG 155). Every plate page of the range was opened, top and bottom half of the Greek column, gutter included (Calfa pp. 96–106 = PDF pp. 99–111 = raw/pg155-plates/calfa{96…106}_*.png); per-page log in data/briefs/symeon-PLATE-READS-0001.tsv. Latin twin consulted for every paragraph (§6 pass); findings below, per chunk.
Chunk 0001 (cols 0181C–0185D)
Plate findings
- No footnotes, no note markers, no editor's apparatus on pp. 96–98.
- Band letters placed: 181: C D · 184: A B C D · 185: A B C D (185's D falls at the Peter quotation, the last line of this chunk).
- Bold Iassy numerals: 64 (col 181, between ὄντα and Λόγον — Calfa lost it) and 65 (col 184, between διαβαίνει and τὴν κτίσιν — Calfa
ΟΞ). - Chapter heads: ΚΕΦΑΛ. ΜΒʹ (Calfa
πΕΦΑΛ ΜΠʹ) with italic subtitle Διατί … ἀλλὰ τῶν ἀνθρώπων; ΚΕΦΑΛ. ΜΓʹ (CalfaΚΚΕΦΑΙ. ΜΓʹ) with italic subtitle Ὅτι ὁ Χριστὸς … ἐδέξατο. Both subtitles are in Calfa; no[ed:]needed in this chunk. - Plate dittography (Pattern 11), col 184C: two consecutive lines of the plate both read νοητή τε καὶ αἰσθητή, ἕνωσις δὲ τῶν δύο ἄνθρωπος. A compositor's doubled line (the second copy has no grammatical slot; the sentence runs on to μόνος). Calfa carries both, the Latin (solus antem homo ex duobus coalescit) has it once. Both rendered;
[d:]on the second. - Full-width Greek line (8a.G.2), col 185B: Κυρίῳ ἐσόμεθα. Κατενόησας τὸ μυστήριον, ἄνθρωπε, ὡς ἐνεχώρει εἰπεῖν ἡμᾶς τῆς τοῦ Σωτῆρος runs across into the Latin column, and the next line ends ἐνανθρωπήσεως ; — the plate prints a QUESTION MARK, which Calfa lost (and swallowed the following Κληρικός as
ΚλΓκίς). The English asks the question. ⚑ For the orchestrator: our Latin twin at col 186 has this Greek line OCR'd into it as junk (Ó; iveyópet elzslv huäç the v Eweg), so the Latin there is short a line's Latin too. - Plate parentheses (τῇ τῶν ἀγγέλων φημὶ) and (οἶμαι) are Migne's; Calfa mangled the second into
δι´ ἣν(ομαι. Kept as parentheses in the English. - Junk dropped silently:
ΚΟΔΡΙΤ κΛΙΙ.at col 184 head (= the Latin column's CAPUT XLII); stray band-letterΚinΚμᾶλλον.

Genuine cruces
- 0181C ὅλω(ς), 0184C ἀναμαρτήτω(ς). The plate's last letter is worn in both: ὅλω, (a comma-like mark) and ἀναμαρτήτω followed by a gap. Grammar wants the adverbs ὅλως ("at all") and ἀναμαρτήτως ("sinlessly"); Latin nulli naturae … possibile / praeter peccatum concurs. Same class as 0180 κρειττόνω(ς) in the anchor: worn, not wrong — no
[sic:]. - 0181D τῶν οἰκείων, ἐχόντων τὴν χάριν αὐτοῦ — gender undecidable ("his own people" or "his own things"). Rendered neutrally, "those that are his own, having his grace." Latin bonaque sua … continentia takes it as neuter; it settles nothing about the Greek.
- 0184A μυρίων … ἱερουργῶν. Read as the genitive plural of the noun ἱερουργός ("of celebrants"), not a participle: "though myriads of celebrants offer." Latin sescenti offerant sacerdotes agrees.
- 0184B Κατανοεῖ οὖν — the plate's accent sits ambiguously (indicative κατανοεῖ or imperative κατανόει, same letters). The imperative fits the bishop's κατανόησον a few lines earlier and Latin recogita; rendered "Consider, then." Accent-only; not a word change.
- 0184B πρὸς αὐτήν (feminine, plate and Calfa agree) — "akin toward it"; the antecedent (θεότης? φύσις?) is not expressed. Rendered "toward it". Latin ad illud neuter.
- 0184D καὶ διάκεινται. The type on the last line of col 184 is damaged (δι·ά·κειν-ται); read διάκεινται, "and are disposed," rendered bare. Latin et accedunt is a looser sense (draw near) — whether the Greek is διϊκνοῦνται or similar cannot be settled on this copy. Second-witness candidate.
- 0184D τοῦ λόγου ψυχῆς — lower-case λόγου on the plate (Calfa agrees). Context and Latin Verbi anima make it the Word; rendered "the Word". Capitalization is editorial.
- 0184C the long ἐπεὶ … λαμβάνει period is anacoluthic (ἐπεὶ γὰρ ἀγαθός … οὐ γὰρ ἂν … τὸ ἄκρον γὰρ … ἐπεὶ Θεοῦ ἡ κτίσις … λαμβάνει) — carried as one sentence, comma-joined as printed; not repaired.
- 0181C ἐπειδήπερ after a question mark, lower case (plate: ἄτρεπτος; ἐπειδήπερ) — Pattern 8, kept: "…not being by nature unchangeable? since some of them fell away". Same at 0185C πῶς γὰρ ὁ καθαρὸς μόνος; ἀλλ᾽ ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν — "…he who alone is pure? but for our sake".
- 0185D Peter, Acts 2:36, printed without guillemets (Ὅτι καὶ Κύριον …): no quotation marks supplied (Pattern 6). Isaiah 61:1 is in « » on the plate and in the English.
Pattern 16 pass
Nothing fired. Examined and declined:
- Clericus. Quare … non poterat? — the twin's opening is chunk 0000's Latin (prepended).
- sescenti ‖ μυρίων — Allatius' idiom for "countless"; not a numeral divergence.
- Quod Christus sacramenta ipse in se suscepit ‖ ὅτι … μυστήρια … ἐδέξατο — Latin sacramenta is his word for μυστήρια (the anchor ruling), no marker.
- Perpendistine … mysterium? ‖ Κατενόησας … ; — agree (both questions); Calfa had lost the ;. Paragraphs where the pass found nothing at all: the opening (κατὰ χάριν … ζωοποιῷ Πνεύματι), the priests-many/Christ-one paragraph, the Cleric's thanks, ch. 42's angelic-nature argument, the eschatological paragraph (ἀποκαραδοκεῖ … σὺν Κυρίῳ), ch. 43 baptism and chrism.
Terms fixed in this chunk
ἐνανθρώπησις = "becoming man" (the Word of God's becoming man) · μύρον = "ointment" (beside ἔλαιον "oil") · νοητός = intelligible · νοερός = intellectual · αἰσθητός = sensible · θελητικός = volitive · ἀνάπλασις = refashioning (cf. ἀναπλάττων "refashions", 0000) · ὁμόθεος = co-divine · ἱερουργός = celebrant.
EN/Greek ratio 0001: 1354 / 1029 = 1.32.
Chunk 0002 (cols 0185D–0192B)
Plate findings
- No footnotes, no note markers, no editor's apparatus on pp. 98–101.
- Band letters placed: 188: A B C D · 189: A B C D · 192: A (185's remaining text has no further letter; its D fell in chunk 0001).
- Bold Iassy numerals: 66 (col 185 foot, between ὑπέμεινε and δι᾽ ἡμᾶς — Calfa
ζ); 67 (col 189, between ὑπεδέξατο and ὁ Σωτήρ — Calfa lost it). - Chapter heads: ΚΕΦΑΛ. ΜΔʹ (Calfa
ΚΕΦΛ. ΜΛʹ) and ΚΕΦΑΛ. ΜΕʹ, each with its italic subtitle (both in Calfa). Neither is followed by a speaker tag on the plate — the bishop simply continues; none supplied. - A WHOLE PLATE LINE LOST BY CALFA, col 188C/D: the plate reads οἷον τὸ ἐκ τοῦ | σώματος τοῦ θείου καὶ μυροβλύτου Δημητρίου, ἢ | τινος ἄλλου τῶν ἁγίων; Calfa jumps from τοῦ to τινος. Words lost mid-sentence, plate certain → restored silently (13a clause 1): "such as that from the body of the divine and ointment-streaming Demetrius, or of some other of the saints." Latin col 189 (a corpore divi … Demetrii, sive alii cujusdam sancti) independently carries it. ⚑ A Calfa patch candidate (whole line).
- PLATE NON-WORD, col 189D: χειρονοτονηθείς (zoomed at 2×; mid-line, not at a break — the syllable -νο- is doubled in Migne's type). →
ordained [sic: χειρονοτονηθείς], sense rendered (Pattern 7 amendment). Calfa carries the same doubled form, so our file and the plate agree; the plate is the witness. - Plate punctuation that Calfa changed: ἐν τῷ βαπτίσματι, ἵνα (188B; Calfa full stop); βαπτιζόμενος, καὶ οἱ βαπτισθέντες (188C; Calfa full stop); chunk end ἦν ἀεί, — col 192A prints a comma (worn, but it descends) before Καὶ ἐκ τῆς νεφέλης; Calfa a full stop. The English chunk ends on the comma (Pattern 8); the μέν … δέ runs into chunk 0003.
- Plate parentheses kept: (ὡς τὰ τῶν Λατίνων, ἢ τινῶν ἄλλων βρέφη); (τὸ γὰρ πλήρωμα τῆς Θεότητος ἔλαβες); (ἐν ἄρτῳ δηλονότι καὶ οἴνῳ).
- «Σφραγὶς δωρεᾶς Πνεύματος ἁγίου. Ἀμήν» — no stop after Ἀμήν on the plate; none supplied. Heb 7:26 (καὶ τοιοῦτος ἡμῖν …) and Ps 109:4 (ἱερεὺς εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα …) carry no guillemets on the plate (the Latin column sets Heb 7:26 in « »); no quotation marks supplied.

Genuine cruces
- 0188D Σιττὴν ἁγίας (plate = Calfa): "the one called Sittē the holy" — an icon name we cannot identify; the accusative after λεγομένης is printed. Latin veluti sancta dicitur Sata is a different form of the name — Allatius' transliteration, not a fact asserted; no marker. Carried as printed (Σιττήν → Sittē).
- 0188C κεχρῖσθαι (perfect) — "ought to have been anointed," carried, not leveled to a present.
- 0188A οὐκ ἔτι δὲ καὶ τοὺς ἀρραβῶνας ἔχει — οὐκέτι "not further / not yet"; rendered "he does not yet also have." Negation carried.
- 0188B ἀρχιερεῖς in running text (πατριαρχῶν καὶ ἀρχιερέων; τῶν ἀρχιερέων Χριστοῦ; τῶν θειοτάτων ἀρχιερέων) are the consecrating BISHOPS → "bishops" (Wilson's 2026-10-05 rule); in ch. 44–45 ἀρχιερεύς is CHRIST (Heb 4:14, 7:26) → "high priest." Same word, two renderings, by the ruling's own test.
- 0188D τῶν ἀρχιερέων Χριστοῦ, τῶν ἀποστόλων, μᾶλλον δὲ αὐτοῦ τοῦ Χριστοῦ πλουτούντων τὴν δύναμιν — τῶν ἀποστόλων construed with τὴν δύναμιν ("rich in the power of the apostles, or rather of Christ himself"), not in apposition to the bishops. Latin a Christi sacerdotibus, apostolis videlicet takes it as apposition. The Greek order and μᾶλλον δὲ αὐτοῦ τοῦ Χριστοῦ (parallel genitive) decide it; logged, not marked (construal, not a fact).
- 0185D ὅπερ, καθὼς εἴρηται ἐν τῷ βαπτίσματι, ἔλαβεν — the plate's comma puts ἐν τῷ βαπτίσματι inside the parenthesis; carried as printed ("which, as has been said in the baptism, he received …"), awkwardness and all.
Pattern 16 pass
Nothing fired. Examined and declined:
- Quod Salvator ipse Eucharistiam perficienda celebravit ‖ ὅτι τὴν ἱερουργίαν αὐτὸς ἐτέλεσεν — Allatius' gloss of ἱερουργία; free rendering.
- Gratia igitur et Christi signo caret ‖ ἀχαρίτωτος ἄρα καὶ ἀσφράγιστος — agree.
- apostolis videlicet (apposition) — see crux above; a construal, not a divergent fact.

Plate findings
- No footnotes, no note markers, no editor's apparatus on pp. 101–103.
- Band letters placed: 192: B C D · 193: A B C D · 196: A B C D.
- Bold Iassy numerals: 68 (col 192, between γὰρ and αὐτόν — Calfa

ΚΕΒΛΛ.), ΜΖʹ (CalfaΛΖʹ), ΜΗʹ, ΜΘʹ (CalfaΑΙΘʹ), Νʹ, and ΝΑʹ = CHAPTER 51 (CalfaΝΔʹ— the plate is unambiguous; Νʹ precedes it). Only ΜΘʹ is followed by a speaker tag on the plate. - The negatives Calfa garbled are on the plate: col 193A καὶ τὴν παιδοποιίαν οὐκ ἀποστρέφεται (Calfa
αὐν ἀποστοέσεται); col 193C μετὰ τελωνῶν καὶ ἁμαρτωλῶν οὐ παρῃτεῖτο (Calfaαλ). Both carried. - Unclosed guillemet, col 192D: «Ἡρμοσάμην, λέγων, ὑμᾶς … τῷ Χριστῷ. — no closing » anywhere on the plate (Calfa same; the Latin column closes it). Pattern 8: none supplied; the English « stays open, as printed.
- Plate punctuation kept: ὅλος ἐνοικεῖ ἐν αὐτῷ εἰ δ᾽ οὖν, (193A — no mark at all between αὐτῷ and εἰ); ξενιτεύων. καὶ μὴ ἔχων (196B — stop then lower case); εὐλογίαν παράσχῃ. Καὶ (196C — plate stop, Calfa comma); συντριβῆς, ἐλέους (196D — plate comma, Calfa stop); μετενόει ; 69 μᾶλλον (lower case after the question mark).

Genuine cruces
- 0193A εἰ δ᾽ οὖν — "but if not" (if a man is not able/has no room for virginity), with no punctuation before it on the plate: "and dwells wholly in him but if not, he blesses the marriage that is in him". Carried unpunctuated (Pattern 8). τὸν γάμον τὸν ἐν αὐτῷ, "the marriage that is in him", is printed so; Latin has in semetipso nuptias is no help.
- 0192D the open « at 2 Cor 11:2 — see plate findings. Where the quotation ends is the reader's inference (after τῷ Χριστῷ); we do not close it.
- 0193C ἀρνησάμενον τρίτον — τρίτον adverbial, "denied a third time"; τρίς later "thrice". Two words, two renderings.
- 0196C καὶ τέλος θανατούμενος, ἵνα … — a participial fragment with no main verb, printed as its own sentence; carried as a fragment ("And at the last put to death, that …").
- 0196D δι᾽ ἐξομολογήσεως — ⚑ term clash for stints B/C and Wilson: the anchor rendered τοῦ ἐξαγορεῦσαι τὰ πταίσματα "the confessing of one's faults", and here both ἐξαγόρευσις (193B) and ἐξομολόγησις (196D, and through ch. 51ff.) occur. Both are rendered "confession" for now; if one word per term is wanted, the proposal is ἐξομολόγησις = confession, ἐξαγόρευσις = "declaration". Not changed unilaterally.
- 0192C ἐτέλει (Καὶ ἐκ τῆς νεφέλης δὲ ὁ Πατὴρ τοῦτον τότε … ἐτέλει) — τελεῖν in its rite sense; rendered "was perfecting him" (imperfect kept). Latin perficiebat.
Pattern 16 pass
Fired twice, both in ch. 46 (Latin col 191, checked on the plate's Latin column, not only the twin):
- 0192 ὡς δημιουργός ‖ prout minister — the Greek makes Christ the CREATOR who established marriage; the Latin makes him its MINISTER. A different fact about the agent.
[lat: the Latin gives prout minister, "as minister"]. - 0192 γεγέννηται παρὰ μεμνηστευμένης ἀνδρί ‖ Genitus est enim ut homini socius permanens — the Greek: born of a woman betrothed to a man (the chapter's marriage point); the Latin: born "that, remaining a companion to man," with no betrothal at all. A missing fact.
[lat: …]fired. (Plate Latin read directly: the twin's text is accurate here.) Examined and declined: Vides igitur modum … (statement) ‖ Ὁρᾷς … ; (question) — punctuation, not a fact · Quod poenitentiam Christus ipse docuit ‖ ὅτι καὶ τὰ τῆς μετανοίας … ἔδειξεν — free · uxorem in adulterio deprehensam ‖ τὴν ἐπὶ μοιχείᾳ — agree · qui fenerari destitit ‖ ἀπολιπόντα τὸ τελωνεῖν — Allatius' looseness (usurer for tax-gatherer), declined as paraphrase of the same Matthew-figure, logged. Paragraphs where the pass found nothing: the Father-from-the-cloud paragraph, ch. 47 (virginity, the bridegroom), ch. 48 (eunuchs, Paul on childbearing, Sodom), the Cleric's question, ch. 49, ch. 50.

Plate findings

- Band letters placed: 197: A (beside the ΚΕΦΑΛ. ΝΒʹ head) B C D · 200: A B C D · 201: A. (196D carries no letter after the ΝΑʹ subtitle, where chunk 0003 placed D.)
- Bold Iassy numerals: 70 (col 196D, between ταπεινώσει and προσελθόντες — Calfa lost it); 71 (col 200A, between πίστεως and ἵστασθαι — Calfa
Τ ἵσ ασθαι). - Chapter heads, subtitles all in Calfa: ΚΕΦΑΛ. ΝΒʹ (a three-sentence subtitle: Ὅτι … περιλαμβάνεται. Καὶ διὰ τί … καλεῖται. Καὶ τίς ἡ δύναμις τούτου.), ΝΓʹ, ΝΔʹ. ΝΔʹ's subtitle opens Τί τὸ «Ἄφες …» — Calfa lost the Τί; restored silently as lost words. No speaker tag follows any of them.
- Words Calfa lost, restored silently (13a cl. 1), col 201A: plate Ἀνήγαγε γὰρ αὐτὸν εἰς τὴν ἀφθαρσίαν, καὶ τοῖς ἀθανάτοις συνῆψεν ἀγγέλοις; Calfa reads Ἀνήγαγε γὰρ καὶ τοῖς ἀθανάτοις. English: "For he led him up to incorruption, and joined him to the immortal angels." ⚑ Calfa patch candidate.
- Guillemet Calfa lost, col 200B: «Ἰδοὺ ἡμεῖς ἀφήκαμεν πάντα, καὶ ἠκολουθήσαμέν σοι.» — the plate closes it; the English closes it.
- Plate punctuation kept: ἐπείγεται Διὸ καὶ εἴ τις (197B — no stop on the plate; the English runs on: "…presses on to run toward that Wherefore also if anyone …"); plate parenthesis (τίς δὲ ὁ μηδόλως περιπεσών ;); «Τίμα τὸν πατέρα σου καὶ τὴν μητέρα σου ;» — the question mark inside the guillemets; Διὰ τί ; Ὅτι.
- Full-width LATIN lines at the foot of col 197 (tiæ, » et alias : « Agite poenitentiam … politiam praestitit accommodatam.) sit under the Greek column above ΚΕΦΑΛ. ΝΓʹ — Latin overflow, not Greek; nothing to render. ⚑ The Latin twin may have lost or misplaced these.

Genuine cruces
- 0197B ἐπείγεται Διό — no stop on the plate (nor in Calfa); the English carries the run-on rather than supply a full stop (Pattern 8). A reader sees a sentence boundary with no mark; that is the plate.
- 0197D ὁ καὶ τὸ σχῆμα πρῶτος μετὰ καὶ τοῦ Ἠλιοῦ προτυπώσας — μετά + genitive "together with Elijah"; rendered "who first, together with Elijah too, prefigured the habit." The Latin qui primus post Eliam poenitentis habitum induit ("first AFTER Elijah") reads μετά as if with the accusative. Considered for
[lat:]and declined: both columns make the Baptist the first exemplar alongside/next to Elijah; Allatius' post is a construal of the same words, not a different fact. Logged for Wilson's calibration. - 0197C ταύτην γὰρ ὀφείλουσι μόνον ἐξαιρέτως οἱ μοναχοί — μόνον could bind to ταύτην ("this alone") or to οἱ μοναχοί ("only the monks"); the next clause (ἀλλὰ καὶ οἱ ἐν κόσμῳ …) undercuts "only the monks". Rendered "For this only the monks owe, in a special way" — ambiguity kept.
- 0200C καὶ τῶν γονέων καταφρονεῖν ὧδε παραινεῖ, καὶ ἐν αὐτοῖς τοῖς καιρίοις — τὰ καίρια "the critical/urgent moments"; rendered "and that in the very moments of need."
- 0196D ἀρχιερεῦσι (ch. 51 subtitle, end of chunk 0003) and τῆς ἀρχιερατικῆς χάριτος (0200B, of the apostles judging Israel) — "bishops" / "episcopal grace," per the running- text rule.
Pattern 16 pass
Nothing fired. Examined and declined:
- post Eliam ‖ μετὰ τοῦ Ἠλιοῦ — see crux.
- Mt 16:24 — the Latin column reads tollat crucem suam quotidie ("daily", Lk 9:23's word); the Greek has no καθ᾽ ἡμέραν. Allatius conforming the citation to the Vulgate's Luke; scripture-form, not an assertion by Symeon. Declined, logged.
- quod pontificalis est gratiae ‖ τῆς ἀρχιερατικῆς … χάριτος — agree.
- divina enim non alia fuit Patris, alia ejus voluntas ‖ τὸ τοῦ Πατρὸς θεῖον ἓν θέλημα καὶ αὐτοῦ — agree (Allatius' negative paraphrase of "one will"; polarity agrees).
- in hac vita autem minime vivit ‖ οὐ ζῇ ἐν τῷδε τῷ βίῳ — agree. Paragraphs where the pass found nothing: the binding-and-loosing paragraph (John 20:22–23), ch. 52's habit/garment/black paragraphs, the true-monk paragraph, ch. 53 Pilate paragraph, the Peter/twelve thrones paragraph, the Gethsemane and "not worthy of me" catena, the "bury his father" paragraph, ch. 54.

Plate findings (the plate against our Greek source)
- Ch. 55 subtitle half-lost →
[ed:](col 201). The plate prints ΚΕΦΑΛ. ΝΕʹ / Τί τὸ, «Οὐδεὶς βαλὼν τὴν χεῖρα αὐτοῦ ἐπ᾽ ἄροτρον.»; Calfa hasΚΕΦΑΛ. ΝΕʹ ρΑΡΟΤ Ον. ἄροτρον.»(Latin-column CAPUT junk plus the subtitle's last word). Restored as an[ed:]that says our source keeps only the last word. Every other chapter subtitle in the range (Νϛʹ, ΝΖʹ, ΝΗʹ, ΝΘʹ, Ξʹ, ΞΑʹ, ΞΒʹ) is in Calfa — ΝΖʹ asΝα·, Ξʹ asΣʹ, ΞΑʹ truncated (βαπτί ΟΗΤίι) — and is translated inline from the plate. - Two whole lines Calfa dropped, restored from the plate silently (Calfa damage, ladder row 1):
- col 201, Luke 9:62: the plate quotes the verse whole — Οὐδεὶς βαλὼν τὴν χεῖρα αὐτοῦ ἐπ᾽ ἄροτρον καὶ στραφεὶς εἰς τὰ ὀπίσω, εὔθετός ἐστιν εἰς τὴν βασιλείαν τῶν οὐρανῶν. Calfa lost the line καὶ στραφεὶς … εἰς τὴν and garbled βασιλείαν as
μασιλείαν. - col 217, the column's last line: φα|νερὰν γὰρ καὶ βεβαίαν εἶνα(ι) δεῖ τοῦ κακοῦ τὴν ἀποτα|γήν (continuing col 220). Calfa has
φα [0220] ἵήν. The vowel of -νερ?ν and the final ι of εἶναι are not legible on this copy; the sense is certain ("for the renunciation of evil must be manifest and firm"). The[0220]anchor stays where the Greek chunk has it; the English puts it after the restored clause. - Bold Iassy page numbers 72–79 read off the plate and printed bold at their plate positions; Calfa lost or garbled every one: 72 col 201 after ἦρξω, (lost) · 73 col 204 before ἐγερεῖ (
ἦᾳ) · 74 col 205 after στόματι (Ἅ) · 75 col 209 before ἀπέρχεται (Ξ) · 76 col 212 before γεγεννημένον (ἧξ) · 77 col 213 before καὶ ἀναγεννῶν (ἢ) · 78 col 216 between τὴν πρὶν and ἀπολέσας (ἦ) · 79 col 217 between βεβαιοῖ τε and καὶ τελειοῖ (lost). ⚑ἢfor 77 andἦfor 78 look like real Greek words; both would have been translated as "or" / "was" without the plate. - Full-width lines at col 212 (end of ch. 60): the last three Greek lines run across both columns (ρίῳ ποιήσας … Καὶ ταῦτα μὲν οὕτως.). Read on a full-width strip; Calfa agrees.
- Latin-column junk inside the Greek stream, dropped silently:
ρΑΡΟΤ Ον.(201),ζΑΡΟΤ Γviii.at[0208](the Greek column opens directly with Κληρικός.; no heading),ΟἈΡΓΤ ΙΚ.(209→212),ΟΗΤίι(212),ΟΑΡΟΤ ουκοοΟ(212→213, mid-word in ἡλι|κίαν),ΔΛΡΕΤ(213→216, mid-word in ἐπιτί|θησι), and band letters glued to words asΚthroughout. - Plate defect,
[sic:]— col 212, ch. 61: Τὰ τοῦ ερωτάτου δὲ βαπτίσματος. Zoomed: the type has no ἱ — a gap stands where the letter and its breathing should be. Calfa carries the sameερωτάτου. English: "the most sacred [sic: ερωτάτου] baptism" (sense rendered beside the marker, per the 2026-09-05 amendment). Conjecture ἱερωτάτου, near-certain (the work's own ἱερώτατος at 0208, ἱερωτάτων Γραφῶν). Plate-verified, so attributable to Migne.

Genuine cruces
- 0201 τῶν λυομένων πατέρων. "dead fathers who are being dissolved" — λύεσθαι of dying (the body's dissolution). Latin parentes solutos concurs. Rendered literally.
- 0201 ἐνίσχυε τὸ ἔργον πρὸς τοῦτο, ὡς καὶ πρὸς τὸ διδάσκειν. The object is "the work," not "them": "that he strengthened the work toward this, as also toward teaching." Rendered as printed; the sense (he equipped the apostles for the monastic life as for preaching) is the reader's. Latin OCR-broken here and settles nothing.
- 0204 καίτοι γε ταύτην τὴν ἄφεσιν … χαριζομένην ἀεί. An accusative participle with no governing verb (an implied "we see/know"). Rendered as a finite clause, "although indeed this remission of sins is granted always…"; no word added that changes the claim. Latin hanc certe remissionem … concessam has the same shape.
- 0204 ἐνταφιασμὸν ἦν αὐτοῦ. ἦν is slightly blurred on the plate (Calfa
ἐνταφιασλν ύ); it is the only reading that construes ("and that myron was for his burial"). The whole Mary/Simon sentence is anacoluthic (οὐχ ἡ … Μαρία … ὡς καὶ ἡ ἐν τῇ οἰκίᾳ … ἀλλ᾽ ὅπερ ἡ … πόρνη); the English keeps its run, setting the parenthetical clauses off with dashes (anchor precedent). - 0205 Βλέπεις, ὅτι τοῦτο δηλοῖ τὸ ἅγιον ἔλαιον; ὅτι read as ὅ τι, "Seest thou what this holy oil signifies?" (Latin Videsne quid hoc sacrum … oleum?). Not an emendation — the plate's spacing of ὅτι/ὅ τι is unreliable in this fount (cf. Ὅ τι δέ at col 201).
- 0208 ὑμετέραν (plural) after ἀδελφέ (singular) inside one speech. Pattern 17 carried as printed: "brother … on account of your love … your request." The Cleric's δεόμεθά σου is singular ("we beseech thee").
- 0209 καὶ ἔτι οὐκ ἀπαθὲς ἐξ ἡδονῆς τίκτεσθαι ἡμᾶς. An infinitive clause with no verb of its own; taken as continuing ἐκδιδάσκει: "and further, that our being born from pleasure is not passionless." Calfa had
καὶ παι οὐκ; the plate's ἔτι is clear. The οὐκ is carried. Latin quoniam nequaquam absque peccato ex voluptate nascitur (causal) — looseness, not a[lat:]. - 0209 τὸ Σωτήριον Ἰησοῦς ἐπικληθείς. Neuter adjective (capitalized on the plate) with no noun: rendered "called by the saving name, Jesus" — "name" supplied from τὸ ὄνομα in the same sentence. Latin nomine salutifero concurs.
- 0209 τῆς νομικῆς δουλείας ἐρρύσατο has no object; "us" supplied from ἀντὶ ἡμῶν just before ("has rescued us from the bondage of the law"). Latin nos eruit.
- 0212 πλὴν μετὰ προσοχῆς, καὶ ἱερέως εὐλαβοῦς τε καὶ νήφοντος — see
[lat:]below; the Greek is clean on the plate and is what the English says. - 0213 μήποτε καὶ ληφθείη οὕτω παρὰ Θεοῦ. The sense of the close of ch. 62 is obscure: "it is good to receive and sanctify the infant, lest it should also be taken thus by God." μήποτε may be the later-Greek "perhaps" ("in case it may thus be accepted by God"), which suits the argument better; but "lest" is its first sense and the Latin reads it so (ne sic a Deo deprehendatur). Rendered "lest" — the English does not choose the friendlier sense. The sentence is also anacoluthic (ὁ τὰ τῶν ἀσεβῶν δεχόμενος βρέφη … καλὸν δέχεσθαι), carried.
- 0213 μετὰ τὴν κοινωνίαν Χριστοῦ βαπτίζειν τε καὶ ἐμπνέειν. Literal: "to baptize and to inbreathe after the communion of Christ" — i.e. that the priest who represents Christ should baptize having communicated. Latin post communicationem Christi baptizare et insufflare concurs. Rendered as printed.
- 0216 Ὁ μὲν ἀρχιερεὺς καὶ ἱερεὺς βαπτίζων — singular participle with two nouns ("the bishop or priest who baptizes" is the probable sense). Rendered with the printed "and". Latin Pontifex quidem et sacerdos baptizans concurs.
- 0220 στρέφεται πρὸς ἀνατολάς, καὶ εὐλογεῖ τὸν Θεὸν ὁ ἀρχιερεύς. The subject of στρέφεται is unexpressed (catechumen or bishop). Rendered "he turns toward the east, and the bishop blesses God", leaving it as open as the Greek.
Pattern 16 pass (Latin twin, every paragraph)
Fired — four [lat:], every one with the LATIN read at the plate first (the twin is rough OCR):
- 0208 (ch. 58) ἄδειάν τε παρέχει ἐνεργεῖν τὰ ἔργα αὐτῶν ‖ Latin col 207 eisdemque facultatem praebet sanctificare opera — "leave to do their works" vs "leave to sanctify works". A different act granted to the women. Plate p.109 confirms sanctificare.
- 0212 (ch. 61) πλὴν μετὰ προσοχῆς, καὶ ἱερέως εὐλαβοῦς τε καὶ νήφοντος ("but with attention, and by a reverent and sober priest") ‖ Latin col 211 nisi quod abest oratio atque pius sanctusque sacerdos ("except that the prayer and a pious and holy priest are lacking"). A polarity divergence: the Greek requires the careful priest in an emergency baptism; the Latin says he is absent. Plate p.111 confirms the Latin.
- 0217 (ch. 61 cont.) «Ἀπεταξάμην», τουτέστιν ἠρνησάμην τε καὶ ἀπεβαλόμην (singular, the one being baptized) ‖ Latin col 218 «Abrenuntiamus,» id est: Abnegamus et rejicimus (plural). Who answers is the point of the rite. Plate p.114 confirms.
- 0220 «Συνεταξάμην αὐτῷ» (singular) ‖ Latin col 219 «Fatemur eum» (plural, and "confess" for "join myself to"). Plate p.115 confirms. The verb is Allatius's usual looseness (he renders συντάσσομαι fateor throughout); only the number fires.
Examined and declined:
- 0204 Jas 5:15 ἐγερεῖ ‖ alleviabit — the Vulgate's verb; translation, not divergence.
- 0205 τῶν πολλῶν ἁμαρτημάτων ‖ innumerorum peccatorum — intensification, looseness.
- 0208 διὰ τὴν ὑμετέραν … ἀγάπην ‖ pro tua … claritate — singular tua and claritate (OCR for charitate); Allatius's number is free here and the sentence asserts nothing different.
- 0208 τῷ τῆς ἁμαρτίας καὶ ἐξ ἡδονῆς ἐξυπηρέτησαν τόκῳ ‖ immunditiae ac voluptatis partum — looseness.
- 0209 Οὐ μὴν δὲ βαπτίζονται πάντες Ἰωάννης καὶ Μαρία ‖ non omnes baptizantur in nomine Joannis et Mariae — same fact, paraphrased.
- 0209 Διὸ καὶ τοῦτο λέλυται τὸ ἐξ ἡδονῆς τίκτεσθαι ‖ ideo noluit nos ex voluptate generari — paraphrase of the same claim.
- 0212 τῇ ὀγδόῃ δὲ πάλιν ὑπὸ τοῦ ἀρχιερέως ‖ rursum autem a pontifice — the Latin has no "on the eighth" (plate p.111 confirms). An omitted phrase, not a different number; declined, logged.
- 0212 Dionysius τελειοῦσιν ἡμᾶς ‖ sanctificare — looseness.
- 0213 Ὁ τὰ τοιαῦτα ποιῶν κατάκριτος ‖ Maledictus qui talia agit — looseness.
- 0213 διὰ τὸν σαρκωθέντα ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν ‖ pro nobis crucifixum — Allatius substitutes "crucified" for "incarnate" inside an explanation of the cross-shape; borderline, declined as paraphrase driven by context (in crucis formam). ⚑ second opinion welcome.
- 0216 (ἐκεῖθεν γὰρ ἔρχεται τὸ φῶς) ‖ twin (inde enim lex venit) — the plate prints lux; the twin's lex is OCR. Not a divergence.
- 0217 «Καὶ ἐξέλασον ἀπ᾽ αὐτοῦ … πνεῦμα» (a petition to God) ‖ «Exi ab eo … spiritus» (a command to the spirit) — Allatius substitutes the familiar Latin exorcism form; declined as a rendering of a quoted formula, but ⚑ borderline.
- 0220 «Συνετάξω τῷ Χριστῷ;» ‖ Fateris Christum?; τὸ τρισήλιον φῶς ‖ lucem ter ut sol splendentem — looseness. Paragraphs where the pass found nothing at all: 0005 ch. 55 (Luke 9:62, the monastic life, the habit, Pachomius, the seven vestments); ch. 56 opening (Mark 6), the anointing of the harlot, the Luke 7 dialogue, the closing oil-and-lights paragraph; 0006 ch. 57 whole; the Cleric's request and the Bishop's reply; ch. 59; ch. 60 apart from the two items above; 0007 the fortieth-day paragraph; the exorcism-times paragraph; the sponsor paragraph; the breathing-upon and cross paragraphs; 0008 the nakedness paragraph; the sealing (forehead/mouth/breast); prayers one to five; the renunciation rubric before «Ἀπετάξω»; the creed paragraph.
Terms fixed in this stint (with the Greek)
εὐχέλαιον = oil of prayer (ch. 56 subtitle, ch. 57) · μύρον = myron throughout (kept distinct from χρίσμα = chrism; includes the Luke 7 ointment, so the two uses stay one word) · ἀνάδοχος = sponsor, ἀναδεχόμενος "he who undertakes for him"; ἐγγυητής/ὁ ἐγγυώμενος = surety / the one who stands surety · ἐμφυσᾶν / ἐμφύσημα = breathe upon / breathing-upon; ἐμπνεῖν / ἔμπνευσις = inbreathe / inbreathing (anchor) — two verbs, two words · ἀφορκισμός = exorcism · ἀποταγή = renunciation, ἀποτάσσομαι = renounce; συνταγή = joining, συντάσσομαι = join myself to · κατηχούμενος = catechumen · σχῆμα (monastic) = habit · τελείωσις = perfecting · θυσιαστήριον = altar · προσκύνησις / προσκυνεῖν = obeisance / do obeisance (including «Καὶ προσκύνησον αὐτῷ») · Θεάδελφος = the Brother of God · ἀνάβολος analabos · κουκούλιον cowl · παλλίον pallium · μανδύας mandyas · εὐχολόγιον = Euchologion · ἱερουργία = sacred service · ἐλεημοσύνη (of God) = mercifulness (ἔλεος stays "mercy", anchor) · ἀναπλάττειν = refashion · ἀναγεννᾶσθαι = regenerate (anchor), παλιγγενεσία = rebirth · τὸ ἱερὸν Σύμβολον = the sacred Symbol · ἀρχιερεύς in running text (baptizing, sealing, vested) = bishop throughout this range — no instance names Christ or the Aaronic priest.
EN/Greek ratios: 0005 1369 / 1001 = 1.37 · 0006 1381 / 1033 = 1.34 · 0007 1397 / 1028 = 1.36 · 0008 1476 / 1054 = 1.40.

Cols 0220 (band C) – 0236 (PG 155), the end of the baptism section. Every plate page of the range was opened (Calfa pp. 115–123 = PDF pp. 120–128 = raw/pg155-plates/calfa{115…123}_*.png), Greek column read whole in two halves, gutter and foot checked; where the Greek runs full-width the full page width was cropped and read (see below). Page-by-page record: data/briefs/symeon-PLATE-READS-0009.tsv. No footnotes, no note markers, no editor's apparatus on any of the nine pages. Latin twin consulted for every paragraph (§6 pass); three Latin-plate crops taken to confirm [lat:] candidates (pp. 116, 120, 121, Latin side).
Band letters placed: col 220: D · 221: A B C D · 224: A B C D · 225: A B C (no D printed on p. 118 — the page's Greek turns full-width at the foot of band B and the C stands beside ΚΕΦΑΛ. ΞΓʹ) · 228: A B C D · 229: A B C D · 232: A B C D · 233: A B C D · 236: A B C D. (Col 220's C falls before 0009's first word, in stint B's text.)
Plate findings (the plate against our Greek source)
- ⛔ Calfa drops FULL-WIDTH lines. On pp. 118–123 the Latin column runs short and Migne sets stretches of Greek across both columns. Calfa (column-bounded) loses or garbles them. Four runs restored from the plate in the English (silent, ladder row 1, each confirmed by the Latin twin's sense):
- 0010, col 225 — γενέσθωσαν ἡμῖν εἰς ὑγίειαν ψυχῆς τε καὶ σώματος.» Καὶ ἀναστάς, δεικνὺς ὅτι πεσόντας ἡμᾶς — the end of the bishop's prayer «Σύ … » (which Calfa leaves unclosed) and the start of the next sentence. Latin: fiantque nobis in sanitatem animae et corporis. Et exsurgens, monstrans Christum nos lapsos erigere.
- 0010, col 225 — καθα-|ροῦ τῷ ἀρχιερεῖ, ἢ τῷ ἱερεῖ, εἰ μὴ πάρεστιν ὁ ἀρχιερεύς· καὶ ἐμφυσᾷ τούτῳ. Καὶ σφραγίζει τρίτον (Calfa fused it to καθατύπω σταυροῦ). Carries a negative (εἰ μή), rendered "if the bishop is not present." Latin: seu ad sacerdotem, si non pontifex.
- 0010, col 228 — Υἱοῦ καὶ τοῦ ἁγίου Πνεύματος, ὅπερ ἡ ὁμολογία ἐστὶ τῶν τριῶν θείων ἀδιαιρέτων καὶ ἀσυγχύτων (Calfa: ξῆγςαγῆοης,.ποπςποςολλα). Latin: et Filii et Spiritus sancti, quod confessio est trium divinarum indivisibilium et inconfusibilium personarum.
- 0011, col 229 / 232 — two line-ends Calfa lost at a chapter break: ἁγίου Πνεύματος. (end of ch. 65) and -λείας. (βασι-|λείας, end of ch. 66). ⚑ These are
data/calfa-patches/candidates (plate-verified) — orchestrator's call. - Bold Iassy page numbers 80–86, all read off the plate, kept bold at the plate position: 80 col 221 (Calfa βΟ) · 81 col 224 (Calfa ΑΠ) · 82 col 225 (Calfa Δ) · 83 col 228 (Calfa -βι glued to ἀπολαμβάνει) · 84 col 229 (Calfa ἦό) · 85 col 232 (Calfa Αῆ) · 86 col 236 (Calfa lost it entirely).
- Chapter heads: ΚΕΦΑΛ. ΞΓʹ–ΞΘʹ (63–69). Every subtitle is in our Greek source (several badly mangled — ΞΕʹ πσαγ έχει … ἢοι » χιύρον; ΞΘʹ with Latin-column junk οοκνα αιοι … Λαενων) and was read off the plate; no
[ed:]needed in this range. - Calfa junk dropped silently: ΑΡΟΤ ΧΙν. ΚοοῦκορΟΟΘ (col 228/229, = CAPUT LXIV), ανοοορΟΟ (col 232/233), σαρΑΡΟΤ κξς (col 233, = σαρκός + CAPUT), the ΚΕΦΑΛ. ΞΘʹ junk line, band letters glued as Κ (Κῶσπερ, Κγνωρίμοις, ἀρχιεΚρεύς, Κπροσευχῶν), ΒΟ/ΑΠ/Δ/ἦό/Αῆ for the Iassy numbers.
- The work's end (col 236 foot) — …ἐροῦμεν ὑμῖν ὡς ἐζητήσατε μυστηρίων. Nothing else on p. 123; the chrism section begins col 237 (not this stint's).

Genuine cruces
- 0009 col 220 ὅσον οὔπω ἔρχεται. The idiom ὅσον οὔπω ("all but, in a moment") contains a printed negative; rendered "in next to no time," which keeps a negative word in the English (7a). Latin quo nondum … pervenit ("which he has not yet reached") reads the οὔπω literally. Not a
[lat:]: the Latin renders the same words, it does not assert another fact. - 0009 col 220 δηλῶν, ὡς ὅτι προσέφερε. Plate prints ὡς ὅτι (pleonastic); rendered "showing how that he offered him." Latin indicans se eum offerre (present, the bishop as subject); the Greek's subject of προσέφερε is grammatically Symeon (the Righteous) or the bishop — left as ambiguous as printed.
- 0009 col 221 Ἡσαΐας καὶ Παῦλος. "Sin is the sting of death" is Paul (1 Cor 15:56) after Hosea 13:14, not Isaiah. Both columns print Isaiah (Isaias) — row 3 of the ladder: attributable to the plate pair, rendered as printed. No
[sic:](an author's slip, not type). - 0010 col 225 τὸ ἁγιασθὲν ἅγιον τρίς. The plate prints no ἔλαιον: "he first pours … the sanctified holy [thing] three times." Rendered "the holy thing that was sanctified"; the sense (the oil) is certain from context and the Latin (oleum … consecratum), but the noun is not on the page and is not supplied.
- 0010 col 225 τρίτον (twice: ἐμφυσᾷ … τρίτον; σφραγίζει τρίτον). Rendered "a third time," the adverb's literal sense; Latin ter ("three times") both times. Not material.
- 0010 col 228 εἰς τὸ ὄνομα λέγων … εἶτα τοῦ Πατρὸς καὶ τοῦ Υἱοῦ … — Symeon quotes the formula's words as words; set in " " (ours), not « » (Pattern 6), since the plate prints no guillemets here.
- 0011 col 229 παρ᾽ ἐμοῦ τοῦ ἀρχιερέως ἢ ἱερέως. First person in Symeon's exposition of the formula ("by me, the bishop or priest") — he voices the celebrant. Latin concurs (A me pontifice seu [sacerdote]). Rendered as printed.
- 0011 col 232 τέκνον ἔτι σώματος. "No longer a child of the BODY" — one might expect σκότους or σαρκός; the plate prints σώματος and the Latin has filius carnis, so both columns read a bodily noun. Rendered "a child of the body."
- 0011 col 232 τὸ μὲν … τὸ δέ (the cowl, κουκούλιον) — Symeon gives two reasons for the cowl ("on the one hand … on the other"); Allatius distributes them between the tunic (tunica quidem innocentiam) and the cowl. Interpretive; English follows the Greek; no marker.
- 0011 col 232/233 Εἰ μὲν … λαμπαδηφοροῦντος … — the genitive absolutes never get a main verb of their own until οἱ μὲν … ὑμνῳδοὶ … ᾄδουσιν; kept as a loose period, plate punctuation (ἵσταται. Εἰ μέν) followed.
- 0012 col 236 «ὁ μὴ ἀναγεννηθείς … τῶν οὐρανῶν, οὕτω καὶ «ὁ μὴ φαγών …» — the plate opens two guillemets and closes only one. Carried as printed (Patterns 6/8).
- 0012 col 233 Ἀμήν with no stop on the plate, at paragraph end — carried, no stop supplied (Pattern 8).
- 0012 col 236 βαπτίζεις … χρίεις — singular, addressed to the imagined objector; "dost thou" (Pattern 17), against the plural ὑμῖν / ἀγαπητοί of the closing paragraph ("you, beloved").
Pattern 16 pass (Latin twin, every paragraph)
Fired (4):
- 0009 col 224 — Θυμιᾷ τε κύκλῳ τὴν κολυμβήθραν (censes the FONT) ‖ Circum altare thus incendit pontifex (around the ALTAR), col 222. Greek and Latin both read at the plate. Different object of the rite →
[lat:]. - 0011 col 229 — Χριστὸς δι᾽ αὐτὸ τοῦτο κατονομάζεται ("Christ is so named for this very reason") ‖ quoniam Christus ideo dixit se in semetipso a patre habere ("since Christ therefore SAID that he had…"), col 230, Latin plate read. The Latin attributes a saying to Christ the Greek does not contain →
[lat:]. - 0011 col 229 — ἀποκαλύπτεται τούτῳ ταῦτα κατὰ καιρόν ("these are REVEALED to him in due season") ‖ in se ea secundum tempus abscondit ("he HIDES them according to the time"), col 230, Latin plate read. Polarity reversed (and against the Latin's own chapter title, tempore manifestandas) →
[lat:]. - 0011 col 232 — τοῖς ἐχθροῖς οὐχ ἀλώσιμος ("not to be captured by the enemies") ‖ jam non nisi aegre inimicis expugnabilis ("not to be taken except with difficulty"), col 231, Latin plate read. The Latin qualifies the negation into a possibility →
[lat:].

- 0009: quo nondum … pervenit ‖ ὅσον οὔπω (see cruces). · cum solemnitate et potestate ‖ μετὰ λαμπρότητος τε καὶ εὐλαβείας — the Latin plate does print potestate ("authority") where the Greek has "reverence"; likely Allatius' or his compositor's slip for pietate, and a manner-adverbial, not a fact asserted — logged, not marked. · Christo formam aquis largiente ("Christ giving form to the waters") ‖ Χριστοῦ μορφουμένου τοῖς ὕδασι ("Christ being formed in the waters") — voice inverted, Allatius' paraphrase; borderline, declined. · ore suo precatur ‖ εἰς ἑαυτὸν εὔχεται — looseness.
- 0010: Christum repraesentans ‖ τὸν Χριστὸν ἐντυπῶν αὐτῷ — looseness. · rursum per baptisma fieri comprobans ‖ διὰ τὸ βάπτισμα ἐξαρχῆς εἶναι μαρτυρῶν — paraphrase of an obscure clause; declined. · Pontifex … baptizatum sanctificat ‖ τὸν βαπτισθέντα τελειοῖ — looseness.
- 0011: habet divina mysteria ‖ ἔχει τὰ θεῖα χαρίσματα — Allatius' word choice; the chapter title has dotes. Declined (the clause carries a fired marker already).
- 0012: Latini non ungunt … post baptismum ‖ οὐδὲ χρίουσιν … τῷ βαπτίσματι ("at baptism") — close enough; declined. · quia sublimiora sunt mysteria ‖ ὑψηλότεροι … παρὰ τῶν ὑψηλοτέρων τὰ θεῖα — paraphrase; declined.
Paragraphs where the pass found nothing at all: 0009 the catechumen's entry and the Symeon/altar paragraph, the sponsor and witnesses, the guardian angel, the history of episcopal baptism, the death-and-resurrection paragraph; 0010 the Noah/olive paragraph, the blessing of the oil, ch. 63 (Alleluia), the Dionysius paragraph, the anointing and the triple immersion, ch. 64 title; 0011 the Is baptized paragraph, the font-as-mother paragraph, ch. 67 (tonsure) apart from the cowl, the procession round the font; 0012 the communion before the altar, ch. 68, the dismissal and the seven days, ch. 69, the closing paragraph.
Terms fixed in this range (new, → the work's conventions)
- μύρον = "myron" (the consecrated ointment), kept distinct from χρίσμα = "chrism" (the fixed term for the mystery). Symeon's own gloss τὸ χρίσμα, ἤτοι τὸ μύρον (ch. 65) is rendered "the chrism, that is, the myron" — the pair must stay two words, or his gloss explains nothing. The chrism section (col 237 ff., chunk 0013) should follow this.
- ἀνάδοχος = sponsor · κολυμβήθρα = font · ναός = temple · ἱεράρχης = hierarch · ἱερουργία = sacred service · ἀνάπλασις / ἀναπλάττειν = refashioning / refashion (after the anchor) · ἐκτυποῦν = figure forth · τυποῦν = typify · ἐπιστροφή = conversion (anchor ch. 39) · υἱοθεσία = adoption · ἀγαλλίασις = gladness · κουκούλιον = cowl · περικεφαλαία = helmet · ἀναβόλιον / ἀνάβολος = mantle · ἐμφώτιον = emphotion (transliterated: a named garment) · κουρά = tonsure · τελούμενος / τετελεσμένος = (the one being) initiated · τελειοῦν = perfect · ὑμνῳδοί = hymn-singers.
EN/Greek ratios (English words with [lat:]/[b:]/anchors stripped, against the Greek chunk's words, which includes Calfa junk): 0009 1275/1001 = 1.27 · 0010 1397/1038 = 1.34 · 0011 1344/1005 = 1.33 · 0012 1106/824 = 1.34. Slightly under the anchor's 1.39: this range is narrative rubric (the rite told step by step) more than doctrinal dialogue, with no speaker turns at all.
BLIND READ — adjudicated 2026-10-05 (Opus)
Three fenced readers (data/briefs/SYMEON-BLIND-READ-R{1,2,3}.md), cruces withheld, every negative in the work checked against the English (≈250 sites): 0 polarity defects. Six findings, all ACCEPTED and applied; one consistency extension:
| # | chunk / col | class | change |
|---|---|---|---|
| R1-F1 | 0000 / 181A | term | ἁγιάσῃ "hallow" → "sanctify" (anchor slip; καθαγιάζειν keeps "hallow") |
| R2-F1 | 0007 / 213A–B | grammar | ellipsis of κατάκριτος made explicit: "and so is he who receives the infants of the impious, unless…" — the bare version read as the reverse rule; Latin Maledictus … necnon qui … suscipit concurs |
| R2-F2 | 0008 / 220C | who | στρέφεται … καὶ εὐλογεῖ … ὁ ἀρχιερεύς: "the bishop turns toward the east and blesses God" (the candidate's acts are genitive absolutes; he was already turned east by the bishop, στρέφει) |
| R3-F1 | 0010 / 225A | count | rubric τρίτον = "three times" (water breathed on): "a third time" implied two earlier breathings that are not described; Latin ter |
| R3-F2 | 0010 / 225 full-width | count | same: oil sealed "three times" |
| R3-F3 | 0010 / 225C ch.63 | grammar | «Ἔρχεται ὁ Θεός…» is the second object of σημαίνει (the meaning of Alleluia), not a second chant: "…signifies a sojourning of God, and «God comes, and praise ye him,» having been set down and being sung prophetically…" |
| ext. | 0003 | count | Peter τὸν ἀρνησάμενον τρίτον: "denied three times" (same τρίτον ruling) |
Ruling recorded: rubrical τρίτον = "three times"; "a third time" only where the text counts the third of a series (0010 "having plunged him a third time" — the third immersion — stays).
Markers re-checked at the plate by the readers, all stand: [lat:] col 208, 212, 217, 220, 229 ×2; [sic:] 189D χειρονοτονηθείς; [d:] 184C. Stint C's two [sic:]-free restorations and stints A/B's dropped lines confirmed at the plate.
Tool fix: scripts/pg-plate-crop.py now writes PID-unique filenames (parallel readers had overwritten each other's crops — R3).
