These are the edition's working notes, published as they were written. They record, work by work, where Migne's plate is defective or the reading uncertain: the printed form, what the English does with it, and why. They are not a groomed apparatus. Where a note argues with itself, withdraws an earlier decision, or leaves a question open, that is the record of how the reading was actually reached, and it is left standing — a conjecture that is visible can be checked, and one that has been tidied away cannot.
The English never silently repairs the page. A construable but wrong reading is rendered literally and the conjecture is recorded here, never applied to the text. How the English is produced and checked →
Every column was read at the plate, word by word: Gallica bpt6k5505319w f15 (cols 29/30, lower half of the page), f16 (31/32), f17 (33/34, upper third only; 8973 begins below the rule). The archive copy (patrologiaecurs04migngoog, PDF pp. 20–21) was the second witness.
§0 · Two printings; the English follows the twin (= the archive printing)
The same situation as 8971 (see src/english/8971/cruces-0000.md §0). The Gallica and archive copies are different settings: the PROLOGUS SECUNDUS subtitle is italic on Gallica and in small capitals on the archive. Our twin matches the archive printing at every disagreement below. The English follows the twin. Patches are filed only where the twin departs from both printings.
§1 · Conventions (shared with 8971)
- Book-title preamble PROLOGUS SECUNDUS. De intentione auctoris et modo procedendi. → "SECOND PROLOGUE. On the intention of the author and the manner of proceeding." Head → "Prologue on the Intention of the Author".
- Rabbi Salomon → Rabbi Solomon (brief §8; not glossed as Rashi in the text).
- doctores catholici / Hebraici → "catholic doctors / the Hebrew ones"; expositores catholici et Hebraei → "catholic and Hebrew expositors".
- puncta → "points" (the correctors' punctuation marks); versus → "verses".
- regulae … claves → "rules … keys". Prima … Septima regula → "The first … The seventh rule": the ordinal chain is preserved one for one, 1 to 7, each opening its own paragraph as Migne sets it. In chunk 0000 Prima est has no regula, and the English follows ("The first is").
- The three causes of obscurity keep Lyra's partim … partim … partim as "partly … partly … partly": (1) scriptorum vitio (scribes); (2) imperitia aliquorum correctorum, which covers both points wrongly placed AND verses begun or ended wrongly (one partim, two qui clauses joined by et); (3) ex modo translationis nostrae. A fourth obscuring cause opens the next paragraph as a separate head (Sciendum etiam … propter modum exponendi communiter traditum), and its structure is kept.
- The fifth rule's four modes: Uno modo … Alio modo … Tertio modo … Quarto modo → "In one way … In another way … In the third way … In the fourth way". Preserved.
- secundum quid → "in a certain respect" (scholastic technical sense, against simpliciter = "simply").
- prophetia praedestinationis / comminationis → "prophecy of predestination / of threatening".
- Pattern 17: super vos Medos (plural) → "against you"; Semen tuum, Egredere de terra tua, ubera tua, cecidisti, Tu signaculum (singular) → thy / thou.
§2 · Cruces
- 0031C
[var: Vulg. filiae, "daughters"]: Cant 1:4. Migne prints filia Jerusalem, singular; the Clementine has filiae Jerusalem, plural. The addressee changes number. Two witnesses: Gallica f16 (filia-Jerusalem, native crop) and archive p. 21 (filia Jerusalem). - 0032B
[var: Vulg. eos, "against them"]: Is 13:17. Migne prints suscitabo super vos Medos; the Clementine has super eos. The person changes, from threat reported to threat addressed. Two witnesses: Gallica f16 and archive p. 21. - 0029D in libro: de Hebraicis, quaestionibus: press variant. The archive printing and the twin set a colon after libro and a comma inside the title. The Gallica printing is clean (in libro de Hebraicis quaestionibus). The English follows the twin's marks literally: "in the book: on Hebrew, questions". No patch.
- 0029B sacra Scriptura, qui dicitur. Gallica shows a stop, while the archive and the twin have a comma. It is a worn comma on Gallica. The English follows the twin.
- 0031D unopened » after sicut tabernacula Cedar. At quod subditur (quasi cum exemplo) sicut tabernacula Cedar, » ad malos refertur: Migne's own, on both printings. Mirrored exactly, and no « is supplied (Pattern 5).
- 0031D historicus et mysticus: quia. Gallica shows a single spaced dot, which is a worn colon (Migne spaces colons, not stops). The archive and the twin have a colon. The English follows the twin.
- 0032A secundi Regum XII Praedicta: no stop in the archive printing or the twin. Gallica prints XII. The English follows the twin and supplies nothing (Pattern 8): "as is had in II Kings XII The aforesaid authority". It reads as a run-on because one printing sets it that way.
- 0032A litteralis simpliciter secunda tamen: MARK LOST BY OUR TWIN. Gallica prints a comma after simpliciter; the archive prints a point (1-bit copy, so it may be a comma). The twin has nothing. The English carries the mark as a comma. Patch filed.
- 0032C Gen XII vs Gallica Gen. XII. Press variant; the archive agrees with the twin. English "Gen XII". No patch.
- 0032D non habet locum, nisi prophetiae praedestinationis: press variant, WORD-LEVEL. Gallica prints nisi in prophetiae; the archive printing and the twin omit in. Both construe, with a dative ("has no place except for the prophecy") or a locative. The English follows the twin. No marker, no patch.
- 0034A beatus Gregorius hom. 10. The plate prints 10, (Gallica f17 at 8×). The sentence certe iniquorum omnium diabolus caput est, et hujus capitis membra sunt omnes iniqui is Gregory, Hom. in Ev. 16. It is rendered as printed and not corrected.
- 0031A Isidore primo libro de summo bono, capite vigesimo. Printed thus. The seven rules of Tyconius stand in Isidore, Sent. I.19. Rendered as printed.
- 0029C, 0032A Augustine contra Vincentium Donatistam. Printed thus (= Ep. 93). Rendered as printed.
- 0032C Exod. XII paraphrase (mansio filiorum Israel in terra Aegypti fuit quadringentorum triginta annorum) is Lyra's own wording of Ex 12:40, not quoted with guillemets. Listed.
- Column anchors interleave with 8971 (0029B–0030B carries both works: 8971's tail at the top of both columns of f15, 8972 below the rule). The twin's anchors match the plate's marginal letters on f15. False positive #1; nothing to report.
- No foot-of-page apparatus on f15, f16 or f17 (my columns). Checked zero, both layers.
