Commentarius in Evangelium secundum Joannem

John Scottus Eriugena — read the work →

These are the edition's working notes, published as they were written. They record, work by work, where Migne's plate is defective or the reading uncertain: the printed form, what the English does with it, and why. They are not a groomed apparatus. Where a note argues with itself, withdraws an earlier decision, or leaves a question open, that is the record of how the reading was actually reached, and it is left standing — a conjecture that is visible can be checked, and one that has been tidied away cannot.

The English never silently repairs the page. A construable but wrong reading is rendered literally and the conjecture is recorded here, never applied to the text. How the English is produced and checked →

Governed by translation-style.md Pattern 7 and by the Eriugena register rules E1–E9 (written on this work — Fable mini-pilot, 2026-09-16; chunk 0000 is the anchor). The English renders what Migne prints, which here is Floss's 1853 edition from the single Laon codex 81 (his title block, dropped by Corpus Corporum, names it: Ex cod. ms. 81 bibl. Laudunensis, membran., sec. IX, 4°; primus edid. Felix Ravaisson … Paris 1849, p. 505 seqq.). Floss's Variae lectiones at the foot record the codex's reading against the text he printed; the English follows the printed text and never the codex. The work survives as three fragments (Cap. I,11–29 · III,1–IV,28 · VI,5–14) and Floss marks the codex's lacunae with spaced dots, carried dot for dot.

Merge, chunks 0001–0009 (2026-09-16)

This section is a merge layer. The three stints' own records stay beside it, unedited: cruces-0001.md (cols 0300D–0309D), cruces-0004.md (0309D–0320C) and cruces-0007.md (0320C–0329B). What follows is only what had to be settled across them.

Merge, chunks 0010–0014 (2026-09-16, run stints A and B)

Stint records kept unedited beside this: cruces-0010.md (cols 0329B–0340A) and cruces-0013.md (0340B–0348B).

Readers' reports are in data/briefs/PL122-BLIND-READ-R*.md.

Col 0297C (chunk 0000) — vir / homo: a lexical point English cannot carry

Saepe sapientes viri vocabulo hominem solent appellare. The lemma neque ex voluntate viri has been rendered "nor of the will of man" (the received wording), and totius hominis "of the whole man" — so Eriugena's point, that wise men use the word for the male (vir) to name the human being (homo), collapses in English. Rendered with both Latin words shown: "call the human being, homo, by the word vir, man." Explicit by design (the general-reader rule); no marker.

Col 0298A (chunk 0000) — proloquiorum more recurrit

Proloquium is the old Latin logicians' word for a proposition (Varro apud Gellius XVI.8), and Eriugena means that the evangelist repeats Et Verbum caro factum est the way an axiom is restated before it is built on. Rendered "recurs in the manner of propositions." Not "prologues" — the word is not prologus.

Col 0298A (chunk 0000) — habitavit in nobis rendered "dwelt in us"

The received English is "dwelt among us", and Eriugena gives that sense first (conversatum est inter nos homines) — but his second gloss, naturam nostram possedit, only works on the literal in nobis. Rendered literally so both glosses stand (E6).

Col 0299A (chunk 0000) — [var:] CANDIDATE for the collation stint

FIRED 2026-09-16 after R1's full plate collation of 0297A–0300B.

Ecce Agnus Dei qui post me venturus est. The Vulgate has Ecce agnus Dei, ecce qui tollit peccatum mundi (John 1:29) and Hic est de quo dixi: Post me venit vir (1:30); Eriugena's lemma splices 1:29's opening onto 1:27/1:15's qui post me venturus est, and he himself notes the other codices' qui post me venit. A [var: Vulg. …] is warranted once the column has been read at the plate; not fired by the pilot.

Col 0299B (chunk 0000) — primus mei erat

"he was first of me" is kept as the calque of πρῶτός μου that Eriugena is pointing at (ut significantius in Graeco); smoothing it to "before me" would erase the contrast he draws with prior me erat two lines earlier.

Col 0300A (chunk 0000) — anchor placed inside a genitive chain

The Latin sets [0300A] between inhumanationis and ejus; English word order puts the anchor after "inhumanation". Position is approximate by one word, as the runbook allows.

Floss's Variae lectiones on this chunk's leaves (read at the plate, 2026-09-16)

Recorded here pending the marker ruling (data/briefs/PL122-VARIAE-LECTIONES-RULING.md); nothing injected.

Stint cruces, to be merged into cruces.md under its standing decisions. Every column of this range was read at the plate (archive n186–n191, corners first; Princeton YkVOAAAAYAAJ as second witness), recorded in data/briefs/9176-PLATE-READS-0001.json. TEI divergences are filed in data/briefs/9176-PENDING-TEI-PATCHES-0001.md, and the English renders the plate at each.

Conventions followed from the anchor: Helias → Elias, Esaias → Isaias, Elisaeus → Eliseus; corrigia → "latchet"; praecursor → "forerunner"; theoria italic; thou/you by number (the Pharisees' es / dic to John are "thou", John's quaeritis / cognoscite and vos nescitis are "you", Eriugena's intellige / si quaeris / cognosce to the reader are singular).

Col 0300D (chunk 0001) — Matt 11:27 printed with vidit for novit: [var:] fired

Nemo vidit Filium nisi Pater, neque Patrem nisi Filius. The Vulgate has nemo novit Filium … neque Patrem quis novit. The whole passage is about whether anyone has SEEN God, and the verb the quotation carries is the one the argument needs; rendered "hath seen" with [var: Vulg. novit, "knoweth"]. Plate-read (n186), Princeton not needed (word-level, clean).

Col 0301A (chunk 0001) — Eph 1:10 loosely quoted, not marked

In quo restaurata sunt omnia, quae in caelo et in terra against the Vulgate's instaurare omnia in Christo, quae in caelis et quae in terra sunt. A paraphrase with no change of sense (restaurare/instaurare both "restore"); no marker.

Col 0301C (chunk 0001) — Floss's bracket [dicatur de]

The plate prints the brackets (Floss's supplement to the codex). Carried as "[is said of]", the brackets kept round the English of the supplied words, since they are his and not ours.

Col 0301D (chunk 0001) — nemo / nullus: shown in Latin

Eriugena's point (the Latin codex's nemo against a Greek οὐδείς he renders nullus) collapses in English, where both are "no one". Rendered « No man (nemo) hath seen God » / « None (nullus) hath seen God », on the model of the anchor's homo/vir at 0297C. No marker.

Col 0302A (chunk 0001) — 1 John 3:2 missing similes ei erimus: [var:] fired

Printed Scimus autem quia, cum ipse apparuerit, videbimus eum, sicuti est; the Vulgate reads cum apparuerit, similes ei erimus: quoniam videbimus eum. The clause about likeness is absent and the quotation is adduced for seeing alone. Marker on "we shall see". (The opening Scimus quia filii Dei sumus for nunc filii Dei sumus is noted, not marked.)

Col 0302B (chunk 0001) — plate intellectuum, TEI intellectum

Plate and Princeton both print virtute purgatissimarum animarum et intellectuum theophaniae sunt. Rendered from the plate, "by the virtue of the most purified souls and intellects". Patch filed.

Col 0302C (chunk 0001) — the plate prints in sinu⎵Patris where the argument needs in sinum

✅ RULED (Wilson, 2026-09-16): the printings rule — both printings are Migne, the English follows the one that construes. The TEI's sinum stands, the English now reads "into the bosom of the Father" (the accusative against the lemma's in), the patch below is WITHDRAWN, and the scanned printing's sinu⎵ is recorded here as the other printing's reading. The stint's original entry follows for the record.

vel ut in Graeco scribitur: qui est in sinu⎵Patris, vel in sinibus Patris. The TEI has sinum, the accusative that renders the Greek εἰς τὸν κόλπον, and that is plainly what Eriugena is pointing at: he sets "as is written in the Greek" against the lemma's in sinu. Both copies print sinu followed by a blank exactly one letter wide, so the plate's type is not the photograph's defect. Under PL122-WITNESSES.md no [sic:] may stand on a single letter in this tome, and Pattern 18's bar (the English asserts what the author argues against) is not met by a repetition, so no marker. The English renders the plate, "who is in the bosom of the Father", which makes the Greek variant read as a repeat of the lemma; that is the defect, shown. The TEI's sinum is filed as a patch toward the plate reading. ⚑ A human should decide whether a blank where a sort failed to print is a reading to patch toward, or whether the TEI's sinum stands and this crux is rewritten.

Col 0302D (chunk 0001) — unusquisque … possidebunt

Singular subject, plural verb, confirmed on the plate. A normal medieval constructio ad sensum (Pattern 9), and English "shall possess" has no number to show; no marker.

Col 0302D (chunk 0001) — Sinus … insinuavit

The etymological play (the Son is the sinus of the Father because he insinuavit the Father to the world) is lost in English; both Latin words shown in parentheses, "intimated" for insinuavit as the anchor renders insinuans at 0300B.

Col 0304B (chunk 0002) — Judaea enim confessio interpretatur: Floss's NOTAE key ª

The plate sets a raised ª after interpretatur and a note under a second rule headed NOTAE (not Variae lectiones): Hieronymus: Juda, laudatio, confessio. Nam [Hebrew] dicitur a verbo [Hebrew] Hiph. [Hebrew], id est, confiteri. Nothing injected (the brief forbids it); recorded in the plate-reads JSON under notae. Same layer at 0307C (Bethania) and 0308A (Jerusalem). ⚑ See the report: this is a prose-note layer the VL ruling did not anticipate.

Col 0304D (chunk 0002) — Rom 4:17 REVERSED: [var:] fired

Ipse enim vocat ea, quae sunt, tanquam quae non sunt — "he calls the things that are as those that are not". The Vulgate reads vocat ea quae non sunt, tamquam ea quae sunt. Plate-read on the archive and the whole line re-read on Princeton PA303: printed as in the TEI. The inversion is sense-reversing, and Eriugena goes on to gloss the call as creation (creavit cuncta, quae fieri voluit), which fits the Vulgate's order, not his. Rendered as printed with [var: Vulg. vocat ea quae non sunt, tamquam ea quae sunt, …]. Not argued further.

Col 0305A (chunk 0002) — rectas facite semitas

Eriugena says the phrase "follows" Dirigite viam Domini; it does not in John 1:23, it is Isaiah 40:3 / Matt 3:3. Not a divergence in a lemma; noted only.

Col 0305B (chunk 0002) — vox praecedit mentis conceptum

"the voice precedes the conception of the mind": logically the conception comes first, and the parallel (John preceded the Word) needs the voice to come first in manifestation. Rendered literally, no marker.

Col 0305B (chunk 0002) — plate φωσφόρος, TEI Φόσφορος

Both copies print lower-case φωσφόρος with ω. The English carries the plate's Greek. Letter-level, patch filed with that flag.

Col 0305C (chunk 0002) — Luke 3:7 / Matt 3:7 paraphrased: [var:] fired

genimina viperarum, quis vos liberabit a superventura ira: "who will deliver you from the wrath coming upon you". The Vulgate (Luke 3:7) has quis ostendit vobis fugere a ventura ira, "who hath shewed you to flee". A different verb and a different agent; Eriugena's gloss (in judicio videlicet post resurrectionem) builds on the deliverance. Marker fired.

Col 0306A (chunk 0002) — Medius autem vestrum stat: [var:] fired

The Clementine prints stetit. Eriugena's gloss hoc est, praesens vobis apparet rests on the present tense, so the tense is material; [var: Vulg. stetit, "hath stood"], placed after the closing italic of the lemma so the marker's own italics do not nest.

Col 0306A (chunk 0002) — in divina disputatione et praedicatione

Confirmed on the plate. "disputation" is odd for God's decree before the world; a dispositione or praedestinatione may lie behind it, but the printed words are real and the sentence says nothing false. Rendered literally, "in the divine disputation and predication". No marker.

Col 0306D (chunk 0002) — the plate DROPS A LINE: Si itaque calceamentum Verbi caro Verbi subtilitatem ⚑⚑

✅ RULED (Wilson, 2026-09-16): the printings rule. The line is Migne's; the printing we scanned dropped it. The English now renders the full sentence ("If therefore the shoe of the Word is the flesh of the Word, not unfittingly understand the latchet of his shoe as the subtlety and unsearchable perplexity…"), the TEI patch is WITHDRAWN, and the omission in the Harvard and Princeton copies is recorded here. The stint's original entry follows for the record.

Our TEI reads Si itaque calceamentum Verbi caro Verbi est, non incongrue corrigiam calceamenti ejus subtilitatem, et investigabilem perplexionem mysteriorum incarnationis intellige: "If then the shoe of the Word is the flesh of the Word, not unfittingly understand the latchet of his shoe as the subtlety and unsearchable perplexity of the mysteries of the incarnation." Both independent copies of the plate omit the whole line est, non incongrue corrigiam calceamenti ejus — the TEI's line breaks match Migne's, and that line is simply not on these pages. The printed sentence has no verb for Si and no object for subtilitatem to be the predicate of. Rendered from the plate, as closely as the printed words allow: "If therefore the shoe of the Word the flesh of the Word understand subtlety, and the unsearchable perplexity of the mysteries of the incarnation." No [ed:] (nothing is lost from the digitization; the digitization has MORE than the plate) and no [sic:] (a missing line is not carried type).

⚑⚑ For a human, and it reaches past this site. Corpus Corporum's TEI follows this plate line for line, yet it carries a line these two printed copies lack, and at every other divergence in this range it has the better reading (sinum, remote, a normalized Φόσφορος). That is the pattern of a later corrected printing with the same lineation as copy-text, like PL 114's two printings. If so, "the plate" is not one thing for PL 122, and the choice of which printing the English follows is a ruling, not a stint's call. This stint followed the rule as written (the printing it read).

investigabilem is rendered "unsearchable", its Vulgate sense (Rom 11:33 investigabiles viae ejus), not "investigable".

Col 0307A (chunk 0002) — John 1:27 quoted without ejus

Non sum dignus, ut solvam corrigiam calceamenti for the Vulgate's ut solvam ejus corrigiam calceamenti. No change of sense; noted, not marked.

Col 0308A (chunk 0003) — ad integram plenissimamque divinae speculationis: adjectives with no noun

Confirmed on both copies. The feminine adjectives most naturally take civitatem from the sentence before (caelestem civitatem significat): "into the entire and most full [city] of divine speculation". Rendered "into the entire and most full one of divine speculation", the neutral "one" standing for the ellipsis without naming a noun the plate does not print.

Col 0308B, 0309D (chunk 0003) — Luke 16:16 as et ab eo regnum caelorum: [var:] fired twice

Printed Lex et prophetae usque ad Joannem, et ab eo regnum caelorum, and again at 0309D Et ab eo regnum caelorum, which Eriugena then glosses: manifestatio gratiae, quam regnum caelorum vocat. The Clementine has ex eo regnum Dei evangelizatur: "kingdom of God", and a verb. Both sites marked, because the second is where the gloss turns on the printed words.

Col 0308C (chunk 0003) — tres τελεταί … tres mysticae hostiae

hostia rendered "victims" (its proper sense, and the sense that makes three "rites" into three offerings); the Greek τελεταί and συνάξεως carried as printed. Floss's VL at συνάξεως reads Cod. synaxios.

Col 0309C (chunk 0003) — plate remota, TEI remote

omnique carnalis conversationis contagione remota: both copies. Rendered as an ablative absolute, "with all contagion of carnal conversation removed". Patch filed (single letter, flagged).

Stint 0004–0006, 2026-09-16. Governed by Pattern 7 and the Eriugena rules E1–E9; standing decisions in cruces.md apply. All six leaves of this range (n191–n196) were read at the plate, corners first, and collated word by word against the twin; reads in data/briefs/9176-PLATE-READS-0004.json, divergences in data/briefs/9176-PENDING-TEI-PATCHES-0004.md. Where the plate differs, the English renders the plate. ⚠ The archive image clips the right edge of cols 312, 316 and 320; those were read on Princeton YkVOAAAAYAAJ (word level).

Col 0310A–0314A (chunk 0004) — plate readings the English follows

0309D stop after venientem ad se.; 0310B comma in immolatus est, ideoque; 0310D vivificantur (twin vivificatur). All filed as patches. None changes the sense the English would otherwise carry.

Col 0310D (chunk 0004) — Floss's NOTAE layer, not our apparatus

The foot of n191–n193 carries a lettered NOTAE layer (prose notes, not Variae lectiones), keyed at 0310D (poena generalis peccati est a: "J. Scotus pessime omnino docet…"), 0311B (mente, non dente, comedimus b: on Eucharistic doctrine, citing Berengarius's formula), 0313A (nasci non possunt a: that the whole passage on original sin "cum veritate Christiana non satis convenire") and 0314A (Pharisaei, divisi b: Jerome's etymology of Pharisaei). Neither the notes nor their keys are in the TEI. Nothing injected; recorded in the plate-reads file for a ruling. They are sentences, so under Pattern 15/19 they would want an English [nt:] if recovered.

Col 0311C (chunk 0004) — Migne's printed dashes

The twin carries --…-- around actio quippe animae est, operatio vero corporis; the English keeps them as a pair of em-dashes. Printed parenthesis, not supplied.

Col 0312B–C (chunk 0004) — theoria, theoricae scientiae, theologica scientia, inhumanati Verbi

naturalis theoria → "natural theoria" (E4). The adjective theoricae scientiae has no E4 row; rendered "theoric knowledge" so it keeps its root with theoria and stays apart from contemplatio ("contemplation"); theologica scientia "theological knowledge". rationes inhumanati Verbi → "the reasons of the inhumanated Word" (E4). naturalium virtutum adunationes → "the unions … of the natural virtues" (moral sense, Maximian). Merge note: peers should confirm "theoric" if the adjective recurs.

Col 0312C (chunk 0004) — depellit rationabilem animum esse

"drives away that he himself is a rational mind": literal. The sense is that the spiritual man no longer thinks of Christ as (only) rational soul; depellit has no clean English construction with the infinitive. Rendered as printed.

Col 0313A (chunk 0004) — indirect question with utrum … an, one ?

Merito quippe quaeritur, quomodo … tollit, utrum … an … auferetur? is rendered by Pattern 8b as one question after a colon, keeping the single printed ? (an earlier draft split it into two).

Col 0313B (chunk 0004) — humana natura in the nominative: an unconstruable clause, and Floss's unplaced note

quia jam ab originali peccato humana natura neque in omnibus communiter, neque in singulis specialiter, re ipsa abolitio facta est perfectaque interemptio. humana natura has no verb of its own; the sense wants a genitive ("abolition … of human nature from original sin"). Rendered as closely as the words allow: "that already from original sin human nature, neither in all in common, nor in individuals specially, in very fact abolition has been made and perfect slaying." The negation is carried only by neque … neque, as printed (no "not" added). ⚑ The foot of this page prints a Variae lectiones note ¹ Sic cod., forte leg. humanae naturae? — Floss keeping the codex's reading and conjecturing the genitive. Its raised key was not found in the running text on either witness, so it cannot be tied to this site with certainty; this clause is the only humana natura on the page that fails to construe. Human look wanted: if the key can be located (a higher-resolution copy), this crux is answered by Floss himself.

Col 0314A (chunk 0004) — lacuna dots

Floss's leader dots after tribuitur. were counted on the plate by ink blobs: 10 on the first line, 17 on the second, matching the twin. Carried verbatim (E7), unitalicized as the twin sets them.

Col 0314D (chunk 0005) — Hierosolomis

Printed so on the plate (n193). An attested medieval spelling of the city (Pattern 9): rendered "Jerusalem", no marker.

Col 0314D (chunk 0005) — no stop after the quotation

The plate prints nisi fuerit Deus cum eo » with no terminal stop (both witnesses); the twin adds .. The English closes the quotation without a stop (Pattern 8). Patch filed.

Col 0315A (chunk 0005) — ἄνωθεν / denuo

E3 applied: the lemma's denuo is "anew" throughout (0314D, 0315C, 0317B); ἄνωθεν is carried in Greek and glossed "from above" (desursum). The sentence ut desursum dicamus pro denuo renders as "so that we say 'from above' for 'anew'"; the supplied quotation marks are ours (" "), since the words are mentioned, not used.

Col 0315B (chunk 0005) — caelestium virtutum, caelestes virtutes

"heavenly powers" (E4, angelic orders), at 0315B and 0315D.

Col 0316A (chunk 0005) — [re] nasci: Floss's bracket and his note

The plate prints [re]nasci¹ with brackets and the Variae lectiones note ¹ Corr., cor. nasci (the second word reads cor. on both witnesses; cod. is expected; the letter is flagged, not guessed). So the codex has nasci and re is Floss's supplement, bracketed by him. The English keeps his bracket: "and be [re]born". The printed text, not the codex, is rendered (E9).

Col 0316B (chunk 0005) — nis quis (twin) / nisi quis (plate)

The twin's nis is a digitization defect: Princeton PA315 prints nisi; the archive copy clips the line end. The English renders nisi. Patch filed; no marker.

Col 0316C (chunk 0005) — Sed et hoc dicendum

"But to this also it must be said:" (E5 family). Quaeritur, qua de causa … ends on a full stop in the plate, so it stays a statement ("It is asked for what reason …"), no ? supplied.

Col 0317C–D (chunk 0006) — Augustine's quotation, and Spiritus capitalization

Augustine's words (In Joh. tr. 12) stand inside Migne's guillemets 1:1 with the lemma italics he prints inside them. The lemma Spiritus ubi vult spirat is rendered "The Spirit breatheth where he will" because Eriugena's own gloss at once identifies it as Spiritus sanctus; the lower-case spiritus of Augustine's and Eriugena's following sentences stays "spirit/it" as printed.

Col 0318A (chunk 0006) — sic est omnis?

Eriugena proposes reading sic est omnis as a question; printed "?" kept: "is everyone so?"

Col 0318B (chunk 0006) — Ignorans spiritum divinae doctrinae refellitur judaica superbia

Ignorans agrees with superbia; rendered "Ignorant of the spirit of divine doctrine, Jewish pride is refuted", keeping the participle on pride as printed. The plate's stop after mysteria. (twin lacks it) is followed.

Col 0318D (chunk 0006) — Inspice ergo (plate) for erga (twin); inverted guillemet

"Consider therefore". Patch filed. On the same column the plate sets an inverted mark (») to open Sermo, quem locutus sum; the twin normalizes to «, and the English follows the twin's « so that the builder renders an opening quotation. Typographic only; recorded, not marked.

Col 0318D (chunk 0006) — John 3:12 lemma punctuation

The plate prints dicebam, vobis, et non creditis quomodo, si dicam vobis caelestia, credetis?, with no comma after creditis (twin has one). ⚑ E11 (2026-09-16): the twin's comma is the reading that construes, so the English follows it: "I was telling you, and you believe not: how, if I shall tell you heavenly things, will you believe?" Patch withdrawn; the plate's form is recorded here. The faint mark after dicebam was not trusted and is not reflected.

Col 0319C (chunk 0006) — humanatio

Exitus ergo ejus a Patre humanatio est → "humanation". Not inhumanatio (E4 "inhumanation") and not incarnatio; kept as its own word so the three stay apart. Merge note: add to the E4 table if it recurs.

Col 0319D (chunk 0006) — quonium in 1 John 3:2

The plate itself prints Scimus quonium filii Dei sumus (n196, clean on the archive). A single letter, so under PL122-WITNESSES.md no [sic:] can be fired in this tome; rendered by its evident sense "that" and logged here. Human look wanted: this is a sense rendering of a non-word without a marker, which Pattern 7 (as amended) only licenses beside a [sic:]; the tome's single-letter rule forbids the marker. The alternative (carry quonium in italics unmarked) would look like our term.

Col 0320C (chunk 0006) — Consepulti sumus … per baptismum, nisi in mortem (Rom 6:4)

Printed nisi in mortem; the Vulgate has in mortem. The nisi is carried ("unless into death") under 7a, although it breaks the quotation's sense; it plausibly echoes nisi in morte Christi a line earlier (eye-skip). Scripture outside John: logged, no [var:] (the range's [var:] policy was kept to the John lemmata), though the column is read and a marker would be licensed. Human look wanted: a [var: Vulg. in mortem] or [cj:] is arguable here.

Lemma divergences from the Vulgate (John), this range

Collated word by word against the Clementine Vulgate. [var:] fired only where the column was read at the plate (all of these were) and the sense turns on it.

Stint 0007–0009, 2026-09-16. Governed by translation-style.md Pattern 7 and the Eriugena rules E1–E9; standing decisions in cruces.md apply unchanged. Every column of this range was read at the plate (archive leaves n196–n201, corners first; Princeton YkVOAAAAYAAJ as second witness and for the right-column line-ends the archive copy clips on n196, n198, n200). Reads: data/briefs/9176-PLATE-READS-0007.json. TEI divergences: data/briefs/9176-PENDING-TEI-PATCHES-0007.md. Floss's Variae lectiones are recorded in the plate-reads JSON and cited below; nothing injected.

Markers fired: three [var:] (0322C, 0327D ×2). No [sic:] (tome rule: no [sic:] on a single letter), no [cj:], no [d:], no [ed:].

Col 0321B (chunk 0007) — neque dimittere ei sua peccata vult: subject left as printed

quoniam neque credit, neque dimittere ei sua peccata vult. The printed clause makes the unbeliever the subject of both verbs, so that he "neither believes, nor wills to forgive him his sins"; the sense wanted is presumably that God does not will to forgive him (or that he does not will his sins to be forgiven him, dimitti). Rendered with the printed binding (7a mechanism 5: no agent supplied) — "since he neither believes, nor wills to forgive him his sins". No marker.

Col 0322C (chunk 0007) — plate demoratur, twin demorabatur (English renders the plate)

The plate prints ibique demoratur et purgat (present, agreeing with purgat); our twin has the imperfect demorabatur, pulled in from the lemma just below. Confirmed on Princeton PA321. English: "there he tarries and purges it". Patch filed.

Col 0322C (chunk 0007) — [var:] baptizavit

The lemma prints Et illic demorabatur cum eis et baptizavit; the Vulgate has baptizabat. Fired because the gloss turns on the perfect: Ubi quaeritur, si Christus ipse baptizavit, quomodo evangelista … dicit: Quanquam Jesus non baptizaret. Column read.

Col 0322C (chunk 0007) — an indirect question with no mark

Ubi quaeritur, si Christus ipse baptizavit, quomodo evangelista … dicit: « … » . Migne sets a full stop, not ?, so Pattern 8b does not apply; rendered as an indirect question ending in a full stop, nothing supplied.

Col 0322D (chunk 0007) — in Αἰνὼν, In Aennon, enos: Floss's Greek over the codex

The lemma sets the place-name in Greek type, in Αἰνὼν juxta Saleim, and the gloss then reads In Aennon, hoc est in aquis; enos enim hebraice aqua dicitur. Floss's Variae lectiones on n197: ¹ at Αἰνὼν, Cod. Aeunon. (third letter u/n uncertain); ² at enos, Sic cod. pro Aennon. So the Greek in the lemma is Floss's, not the codex's, and the codex also wrote enos where the name was meant (E9: the English renders Floss's printed text). Carried as printed: Greek in Greek (E3), Aennon and enos as printed. His NOTAE (b) calls the gloss "right": Recte J. Scotus interpretatur aquis and cites Jerome Aenon, oculus, aut fons eorum. English: "for in Hebrew water is called enos", italics where printed.

Col 0322D (chunk 0007) — praecursor discipulus

Non enim debuerat praecursor discipulus praecursionis suae mysterium intermittere. The two nominatives stand in apposition; rendered "the forerunner, a disciple," rather than binding discipulus to praecursionis. Judgment, no marker.

Col 0323A (chunk 0007) — names as printed

Ebussalem, Ebusseis ("the Ebusites", kept to Floss's E-spelling rather than "Jebusites"), lacum Asfalti ("the lake of Asphalt"), Melchisedech, Saleim / Salem (he prints both, and the English keeps both). His NOTAE (a) on n198 adds Jerome's Jerusalem, visio pacis against Eriugena's templum pacis; the English renders Eriugena's templum.

Col 0323B (chunk 0008) — Non[dum]: Floss's bracket, and a note key not found

Floss prints Non[dum] enim missus fuerat in carcerem Joannes, the bracket his supplement. Rendered "had not [yet] been cast into prison", the bracket carried. The n198 apparatus opens ¹ Cod. non., which fits exactly this bracket, but no raised ¹ is visible anywhere in the left column on either copy (archive read twice at 0.7×, Princeton at 2.6×). Recorded in the JSON with the anchor marked not located; not guessed.

Col 0323B (chunk 0008) — Nullo modo … non solum … contulisse: negations carried; the codex adds a third

Nullo modo enim credendum est, non solum originalis peccati, verum etiam propriorum delictorum remissionem contulisse. Both negations carried: "in no way is it to be believed that it conferred the remission not only of original sin, but also of personal offences." Floss's ² records the codex as non contulisse, which would make it "that it did not** confer…". The English renders Floss's text (E9); this is exactly the site a later reader will want the note for.

Col 0323C (chunk 0008) — aurora quodammodo umbras excutere: the verb is shared, not supplied

et quemadmodum aurora quodammodo umbras excutere, ita doctrina et mysterium praecursoris tenebras … inchoabat excutere. The first member has no finite verb; inchoabat serves both. Plate confirms the wording. Rendered with the printed ellipsis ("just as the dawn in a certain manner to shake off the shadows, so … began to shake off"), nothing supplied.

Col 0325A–0326A (chunk 0008) — datum / donum: "given" / "gift"

Eriugena's distinction (Datum refertur ad naturam, donum refertur ad gratiam) needs two English words that do not collapse; datum is "the given" (plural data, "the givens"), donum "the gift", throughout, including inside James 1:17 (Omne datum optimum et omne donum perfectum → "Every best given and every perfect gift"), since the verse is adduced for exactly this pair. The lemma's fuerit ei datum stays "be given him".

Col 0325A (chunk 0008) — quicquam accipere: Floss's order against the codex

Floss prints the lemma accipere quicquam; ¹ records Cod. quicquam accipere. The later repetitions all print accipere quicquam. No English exponent; noted only.

Col 0326A (chunk 0008) — the plate sets nisi fuerit e

At the head of col. 326 the lemma reads nisi fuerit e with no visible i, on both copies; our twin has ei. A single letter, so no [sic:] on this tome; not patched (see pending file). English "unless it be given him", which is the twin's and the three other printings' reading.

Col 0326B (chunk 0008) — sed quia missus sum ante illum repeated as a head

Sed quia missus sum ante illum, missus sum in mundum prius, nascendo ante illum. The first clause re-quotes the lemma's sed quia missus sum ante illum and the rest glosses it; rendered "But that I am sent before him, I was sent into the world first", with the printed comma (Pattern 8: no colon supplied, though the clause is a re-quotation).

Col 0326C (chunk 0009) — et tu dicis, quia missus est ante illum

The disciples, quoting John back to himself, say missus est ("that he is sent before him"), where John had just said missus sum ("I am sent"). Plate confirms est. Rendered literally, "thou sayest that he is sent before him". es ("thou art sent") is the likely intent; not a negation or correlative, so below the Pattern 18 bar. Crux only.

Col 0326C (chunk 0009) — aut quantus: Floss corrects the codex

² Corr., cod. qu??n?ies. The codex word is illegible on both copies (something like qu–n–ies); not guessed. English renders Floss's quantus, "or how great".

Col 0326D (chunk 0009) — ⚠ audit cum: FOR A HUMAN LOOK

The re-quoted lemma at the foot of col. 326 prints, in our twin, qui stat et audit cum, gaudi,. Eleven lines earlier Floss sets the same lemma Qui stat et audit eum. The archive plate shows cum, but this copy prints e as c elsewhere (0329A Qui credit in cum, where our twin correctly reads eum), and Princeton is too small to settle one letter. So the plate read cannot decide it, and the English follows the twin literally: "who standeth and heareth with, rejoiceth with joy". A preposition with no object has no grammatical slot (Pattern 12's test), but no [sic:] may stand on a single letter in PL 122 and the plate may well print eum. If a higher-resolution witness shows eum, patch the twin and render "heareth him". Filed as "noted, not proposed" in the pending-patches file.

Col 0326D (chunk 0009) — plate gaudio, twin gaudi, (English renders the plate)

Plate prints gaudio (no comma) closing col. 326, gaudet propter vocem sponsi opening col. 327. English "rejoiceth with joy". Patch filed.

Col 0327B (chunk 0009) — majorem [me]: Floss's conjecture

¹ me om. cod., add. ex conj. The bracketed [me] is Floss's; carried as "[me]" in the English.

Col 0327B (chunk 0009) — augmentari potuissetis

Quod si cognosceretis, ex visibilibus signis augmentari potuissetis. Literally "you could have been increased from visible signs"; the sense is presumably that their opinion of Christ could have grown. Rendered literally, no marker.

Col 0327B–C (chunk 0009) — the solstice figure

quod ipse luce inchoante crescere, tenebris autem decrescere natus sit; ego vero luce inchoante minui, tenebris autem inchoantibus crescere natus sum: Christ born at the winter solstice as the days lengthen, John at the summer solstice. The first member prints bare tenebris where the second has tenebris … inchoantibus; the English keeps the asymmetry ("with the darkness" / "as the darkness begins").

Col 0327C (chunk 0009) — the plate sets Qui de ursum venit

The lemma prints a gap for the second s of desursum; the gloss prints desursum cleanly two lines later. Single letter, one copy: crux only, not patched. English "He that cometh from above".

Col 0327D (chunk 0009) — [var:] terra est (John 3:31)

The lemma prints Qui est de terra, terra est; the Vulgate has de terra est. Fired because Eriugena's gloss is built on the printed form: Et ideo terra sum, quia de terra natus sum. Column read.

Col 0327D (chunk 0009) — [var:] Terra es et in terram ibis (Gen 3:19)

Printed « Terra es et in terram ibis »; the Vulgate has pulvis es et in pulverem reverteris. The printed form is the Old Latin rendering of the LXX (γῆ εἶ καὶ εἰς γῆν ἀπελεύσῃ), and it is the proof-text for terra sum: with "dust" the argument loses its word. Fired; column read.

Col 0328B (chunk 0009) — hominem venisse Christum, hominem … accepisse

"we do not doubt that Christ came as man" and "to have received man before sin": homo here is human nature as it was before the fall, which is his whole point; kept as "man", not "humanity". Floss's ² at credendus: Corr.; cod. credendum. English renders credendus.

Col 0328D (chunk 0009) — se in Patre, et aequalitatem ipsius esse

Rendered "he knew himself to be in the Father, and to be his equality": the printed accusative aequalitatem is predicate to se … esse, so the Son is the Father's equality, not merely "equal". Kept.

Col 0329A (chunk 0009) — plate Filii, twin Filius; Floss's [ad] and his sunt

Plate prints unigeniti Filii Dei; twin Filius. English is the same either way. Patch filed. a se ipsis [ad] interitum praeparati: Floss's bracket, carried as "[for] destruction". ¹ at credituri sunt: Corr., pro sunt cod. sed.

Col 0329B (chunk 0009) — verax / verus: kept apart (E3)

The lemma signavit quia Deus verax est is "that God is truthful"; the Greek reading Eriugena offers, Quia Deus verus est, is "that God is true", and the rest of the sentence (verus Deus, veri Dei Filius) follows the Greek. The whole point of quod facilius intelligitur, si graecus sermo legatur is that the two words differ, so the English cannot use "true" for both. signavit "hath sealed", which his gloss quasi sigillo needs.

Lemma divergences from the Vulgate (John 3:16–33 and the scripture quoted in the gloss)

Collated word by word against sources/vulgate/clementine-flat.txt; every column read at the plate, so each reading below is Migne's (Floss's) and not our twin's. Marked = [var:] fired.

Stint 0010–0012, 2026-09-16. Governed by translation-style.md Pattern 7 and the Eriugena rules E1–E12; standing decisions in cruces.md apply unchanged (theoria italic, inhumanation kept apart from incarnation, Holy Spirit, Douay name forms). Every column of this range was read at the plate (archive leaves n201–n206, corners first; Princeton YkVOAAAAYAAJ PA329, PA331, PA335, PA337 as second witness, and in full for col 336, which the archive clips). Reads: data/briefs/9176-PLATE-READS-0010.json. Floss rows: data/briefs/9176-PLATE-NOTES-0010.tsv. TEI divergences: data/briefs/9176-PENDING-TEI-PATCHES-0010.md.

Markers fired: three [var:] (0330C–D, 0334C, 0336C), three [nt:] (Floss's NOTAE a, b, c at 0332A–C, all in chunk 0010), one [d:] (0331C). No [sic:], [cj:], [ed:]. Expected verifier gap: 0010 note markers — Latin 0, English 3 (the three [fn:] land at merge); 0011 and 0012 zero.

Span count: the lemma brief heads its list 83; paragraph-bounded count of my Latin gives 67 italic + 16 guillemet = 83. Agree.

Vocabulary chosen for this range (hold at merge)

Col 0329C (chunk 0010) — Floss's VL ³ placed: the open item

Leaf n201 prints two identical notes, ² and ³ Cod. nunquid. The 0007 stint placed ² after the first Nonne. At 2× on the archive and 3× on Princeton PA329 a second raised key stands after the second Nonne (Nonne ³ et apostoli ab eo missi sunt); on the archive the digit is a blotch of 3-shape, on Princeton a clean ³. So the codex read nunquid for both Nonne. Row placed. The English follows Floss (Nonne, "Were not…?"), E9.

Col 0329D (chunk 0010) — denorum: E12

ceteraque spiritualium denorum divisio. Our twin's denorum is not a word; the plate's second letter is a broken sort on both copies (e/o unsettled). The only word the sentence can be is donorum (plenitudo donorum Dei six lines above). Rendered "the division of spiritual gifts", no marker, no patch.

Col 0329D (chunk 0010) — scripture as printed, not fired

Non enim ex mensura dat Deus spiritum (Vulg. ad mensuram); 1 Cor 12:8 abridged; 1 Cor 12:11 Unus autem operatur atque idem Spiritus, dividens singulis propria (Vulg. Haec autem omnia operantur unus atque idem Spiritus, dividens singulis; Eriugena adds propria, drops haec omnia). None changes the argument; logged, not fired. The anchor [0330A] falls inside the quotation between operatur and atque; English order puts it one phrase later.

Col 0330B–C (chunk 0010) — John 3:36 and the Pauline quotations, not fired

Lemma Qui autem non credit in Filio, non videbit vitam aeternam (Vulg. qui autem incredulus est Filio, non videbit vitam); rendered as printed, "believeth not in the Son … life everlasting". Gen 3:17 in operibus tuis (Vulg. in opere tuo); Eph 2:3 Fuistis aliquando filii irae sicut et ceteri (Vulg. eramus natura filii irae): second person and without natura. Rendered as printed ("You were once children of wrath"). A possible [var:] for Eph 2:3 was declined: the gloss uses only ira, not the person or natura.

Col 0330C–D (chunk 0010) — [var:] John 4:1–2 etsi Jesus ipse non baptizavit

Printed audierant … etsi Jesus ipse non baptizavit, sed discipuli ejus; Clementine Jo 4:1–2 audierunt … (quamquam Jesus non baptizaret, sed discipuli ejus). Fired on the perfect, for the same reason the 0007 stint fired baptizavit at 0322C: the gloss turns on it (Baptizavit Christus et non baptizavit). Column read (n201).

Col 0331B (chunk 0010) — Floss's bracket [abiit]

et ab iis iterum [abiit] in Galilaeam; VL ¹ Abiit om. cod., add. ex conj. Floss's own conjecture, rendered "[went away]" with his bracket, as 0329A's [ad] was rendered "[for]".

Col 0331C (chunk 0010) — [d:] in in Judaeam

de qua Dominus nascens in carne venit in / in Judaeam: the plate sets in at the end of one line and again at the start of the next (checked, n202). A line-break doubling of an identical word, the compositor's, not our hyphen class: both copies are real in. Pattern 11, identical runs, second copy marked: "came into [d: into] Judaea".

Col 0331C (chunk 0010) — neque eos, qui in eum credituri essent

Quoniam vero noluit manere sub lege, neque eos, qui in eum credituri essent, reliquit legem: the accusative eos has no verb of its own (presumably "nor [willed] those … [to remain]"). Rendered literally, "since he would not remain under the law, nor those who were to believe in him, he left the law". No supply, no marker.

Col 0332A (chunk 0010) — quae soli carnali Israel imposita and futurae

Two elliptical phrases with no verb / no noun: "which [was] imposed on carnal Israel alone" and "the beatitude of the future [life]". Supplied words bracketed, per corpus convention.

Col 0332A–C (chunk 0010) — Floss's NOTAE a, b, c → [nt:]

Translated at the keys, per E10. (a) Jerome Galilaea, volutabilis, aut transmigratio perpetrata vel rota, with two Hebrew words (the verb "to roll" and Gilgal, both pointed); Floss prints interpretio (so on both copies), rendered "interpretation". (b) Sic S. Hieronymus: Sichar conclusio sive ramus. (c) Jerome on Sichar for Sichem "shoulders"; Floss suggests Eriugena read numeri for humeri, so the English keeps both Latin words beside their glosses, since the note is about the letters. Hebrew is (Hebrew) in all three, not transcribed letter-exact.

Col 0332C (chunk 0010) — conclusio … conclusus erat. Conclusit Scriptura

The etymology drives the next two sentences, so one English word carries all three: "enclosure … was enclosed … Scripture hath enclosed all things under sin" (Gal 3:22 conclusit). Rom 11:17 is paraphrased, not quoted; not collated.

Col 0332C (chunk 0010) — electos ex gentibus numeratos investigatio manet

manet with an accusative object: "an investigation awaits the chosen numbered from among the Gentiles". The sense of the clause (as an etymology of numeri) is obscure; rendered literally.

Col 0332D–0333A (chunk 0011) — verbless definitions kept verbless

Iter ejus descensus divinitatis suae …; Sessio Christi … possessio; Hauritorium vero studium sapientiae: rendered with a comma and no verb ("His journey, the descent of his divinity…"), as the plate sets them. Lemma sedit sic super fontem (Vulg. sedebat sic supra fontem), Venit mulier ex Samaria (Vulg. de): not fired.

Col 0333B (chunk 0011) — in quo Abraham jussus a Deo immolare Isaac

No finite verb on the plate (checked, n203). "on which Abraham [was] commanded by God to sacrifice Isaac"; the bracket marks the one supplied word.

Col 0333C (chunk 0011) — Christo inhumanato

quae Christo inhumanato plenissime illuxit mundo: dative or ablative absolute. Rendered as an absolute, "which, Christ being inhumanated, shone most fully upon the world", keeping inhumanatus "inhumanated" (E4).

Col 0334A (chunk 0011) — John 4:9, not fired

a me bibere petis, dum sim mulier Samaritana (Vulg. bibere a me poscis, quae sum mulier Samaritana). Same sense.

Col 0334B (chunk 0011) — an indirect question ending in a full stop

Ubi secundum litteram quaeritur, quid est, quod ait femina, …, existimandum. The plate closes with a full stop, so Pattern 8b does not apply; rendered as an indirect question with a full stop.

Col 0334C (chunk 0011) — [var:] John 4:10 without vivam

Printed tu petisses eum, et dedisset tibi aquam. Clementine Jo 4:10 tu forsitan petisses ab eo, et dedisset tibi aquam vivam. Fired because the lemma as printed never mentions living water, while the woman's reply in the next lemma (Quomodo ergo habes aquam vivam?) and Eriugena's own gloss (darem tibi … aquam vivam) both presuppose it. Column read (n203). petisses eum with a bare accusative is rendered "asked him".

Col 0334C (chunk 0011) — John 4:11 neque hauritorium habes, not fired

Vulg. neque in quo haurias habes … unde ergo; printed neque hauritorium habes … Quomodo ergo. The gloss is built on the noun hauritorium, but the sense is the same ("nothing to draw with"), so no marker.

Col 0335A–B (chunk 0011) — John 4:12–14, not fired

bibebat (Vulg. bibit), filii sui, et pecora sua (Vulg. ejus), Quicumque autem biberit (Vulg. qui autem), quam dabo ei (Vulg. quam ego dabo ei). None changes the sense.

Col 0335B (chunk 0011) — Cuicumque … dedero, non sitiet

Anacoluthon on the plate: a dative "to whomsoever" with no nominative for sitiet. Rendered "To whomsoever, believing in me, I shall have given the gift…, [he] shall not thirst for ever."

Col 0336A (chunk 0011) — 1 Cor 11:3, not fired

Caput mulieris vir, caput viri Christus, caput Christi Deus: the Clementine order is omnis viri caput Christus … caput mulieris vir … caput Christi Deus. Eriugena's order (woman → husband → Christ → God) is the ladder his gloss climbs, and the words are all there. Logged.

Col 0336B–C (chunk 0011) — Floss VL on col 336: codex readings not settled

VL ² (at praetendit), ³ (at jubetur): the codex words are damaged on both copies (praeten[?]u[n?]t, iu[r/v?]etur) and are recorded flagged, never guessed. VL ⁴ [potest] is Floss's conjecture, rendered "[can]".

Col 0336C (chunk 0012) — [var:] John 4:17 quia virum non habes

Printed Bene dixisti, quia virum non habes; Clementine Jo 4:17 Bene dixisti, quia non habeo virum, Jesus quoting the woman's own words. The printed lemma turns it into Jesus's statement about her, and the gloss follows that (Novi enim te non habere virum). Fired: the speaker of the clause changes. Column read (n204, line on archive and Princeton).

Col 0336C (chunk 0012) — quae vere dixisti: Floss's forte quia?

VL ⁵ Sic cod., forte quia? So Floss prints the codex's quae and queries quia ("because thou hast said truly"). The English follows the printed quae (E9), taken as feminine singular referring to the woman: "thou who hast said truly". No marker.

Col 0336C (chunk 0012) — neque ideo novi, quia tu dixisti

Negation carried: "nor do I know it for this reason, because thou hast said that thou hast none".

Col 0337A (chunk 0012) — veluti naturali viro errori subditur

As printed (n205): the soul "is subjected, as if to a natural husband, to error". The irony is presumably intended (error takes the husband's place); no conjecture.

Col 0337C (chunk 0012) — gravitatem sacramentorum opprimendam

non ad liberandam animam … sed ad redarguendam, et gravitatem sacramentorum opprimendam: the gerundive agrees with gravitatem, so literally "to press down the weight of the sacraments". Obscure; rendered literally. Rom 5:20 peccatum for Vulg. delictum; 1 Cor 15:56 exact.

Col 0337C (chunk 0012) — the mark after Samaritanae

Both copies set a stop mark before the lemma Et nunc quem habes, colon or semicolon, not settled; our twin has none. English uses a colon. Noted, not patched.

Col 0337D (chunk 0012) — quae ei Dominus de numero virorum suorum

No verb in the relative clause on the plate: "from those things which the Lord [said] to her".

Col 0338A (chunk 0012) — contuntur / coutuntur

Our twin prints the non-word contuntur; the plate prints coutuntur on both copies. The English renders the plate ("do not deal with us"); patch filed with an n/u caveat.

Col 0338A (chunk 0012) — John 4:20, not fired

adorabant (Vulg. adoraverunt); the Vulgate's et vos dicitis … is paraphrased in the gloss. ubi Jacob has no verb: "where Jacob [adored]".

Col 0338B–C (chunk 0012) — John 4:21–22 and John 14:9, not fired

Hierosolimis "Jerusalem"; quia salus ex Judaeis (Vulg. adds est); Philippe, qui me videt, et Patrem meum videt (Vulg. qui videt me, videt et Patrem). meum is added, but nothing in the gloss depends on it. cum tua tota [gente]: Floss's bracket, "[nation]".

Col 0338D–0339A (chunk 0012) — John 4:23–24, not fired

Etenim Pater tales quaerit adorantes se (Vulg. Nam et Pater tales quaerit, qui adorent eum); Spiritus Deus, et adorantes se in spiritu et veritate oportet adorare (Vulg. Spiritus est Deus: et eos qui adorant eum …). The printed lemma has no est; rendered "God [is] spirit". VL ¹ at Jam quia spiritus¹ est (Corr., cod. qui a spiritu): the English follows Floss's quia.

Col 0339B (chunk 0012) — John 4:25 and Venit … non « veniet »

Scio, quia Messias venit, qui dicitur Christus matches; Cum venerit ille, adnuntiabit nobis omnia (Vulg. cum ergo venerit ille, nobis annuntiabit omnia), not fired. The gloss turns on present venit against future veniet, so the lemma's venit is "cometh" and « veniet » is « will come », guillemets 1:1.

Col 0339C (chunk 0012) — Ego sum, qui loquor tibi

Rendered "I am, who speak to thee", not "I am he": the gloss supplies the predicate itself (Ego sum ipse Christus), and a supplied "he" in the lemma would pre-empt it. Vulg. loquor te, not fired.

Col 0339D (chunk 0012) — quia cum Samaritana

No verb: "that with a Samaritan, that is, a foreign woman". Nemo tamen dicebat (Vulg. dixit): "no one was saying", not fired.

Col 0340A (chunk 0012) — the lacuna

Floss's dot run carried dot for dot, including the doubled .. mid-run, as the twin prints it (E7). On the plate (n206) the run is followed by a full dotted line and the head FRAGMENTUM III, which is chunk 0013's.

Chunks found clean

No chunk in this range is free of apparatus, but no column produced a divergence that changes the English except 0338A (coutuntur). n202, n203 and n206 (0331A–0332D, 0333A–0334D, 0339A–0340A) are checked zeros against our twin.

Stint 0013–0014, 2026-09-16. Governed by translation-style.md Pattern 7 and the Eriugena rules E1–E12; standing decisions in cruces.md apply unchanged (theoria italic, forerunner, Holy Spirit, etc.). Every column of this range was read at the plate (archive leaves n206–n210, corners first; Princeton YkVOAAAAYAAJ for the right-column line-ends the archive clips on n206, n208, n210). Markers fired: four [var:] (0341A, 0343A, 0344B, 0346A), one [cj:] (0347A), two [nt:] (Floss's NOTAE at 0340B and 0343C). No [sic:], [d:], [ed:].

⚑ Comparand defect found: clementine-flat.txt Jo 6:10 prints Discumberunt, not a word; the Clementine reads Discubuerunt. Not collated against; add to the lemma brief's defect list.

Where the work ends (0348B)

The commentary ends on leaf n210 at 0348B: duobus sensibus conveniens. then Floss's dot run, a full dotted line, and a centred italic Cetera desunt. Below a double rule across the full page width Floss begins JOANNIS SCOTI de praedestinatione LIBER (title, codex line, MONITUM AD LECTOREM). Nothing below the rule was collated or harvested. The English carries the dot runs dot for dot and renders the rubric The rest is lacking. (E7).

Col 0340B — Deus tentator malorum est

Printed tentator (both copies), "God is the tempter of the wicked", where Jas 1:13 reads Deus enim intentator malorum est ("God is not a tempter of evils"). Rendered as printed. It construes with what follows (Tentat autem electos probandi gratia … altera impiorum reprobat perfidiam: God's temptation proves the just and reprobates the wicked), so it does not meet the Pattern 18 bar. malorum taken as "the wicked" from the paired impiorum; "of evils" is possible. No marker.

Col 0340B — Floss's NOTA (a) on os lampadis

Mira sane interpretatio; derivare enim videtur vocem Philippus a [Hebrew], os, et λαμπάς. The Hebrew (one or two letters, presumably peh, "mouth") is not letter-certain on either copy; written (Hebrew) in the [nt:].

Col 0340C — lemma quid futurum erat facere

Vulg. quid esset facturus; same sense, and the gloss repeats the printed form (quid futurum ei erat facere). No [var:].

Col 0341A — [var:] puerulus … pisciculos

Printed Est puerulus unus hic … duos pisciculos, sed haec quid sunt in tantos?; Vulg. puer, pisces, inter tantos. Fired because the gloss builds on the diminutive: Moses veluti quidam puerulus non incongrue dicitur, "one little boy". in tantos ("unto so many") against inter tantos noted here only. At 0342A Eriugena re-quotes it as sed hoc quid est in tantos? (singular hoc … est); rendered as printed, no second marker.

Col 0341C — Ps 48 quotation

Matches Ps 48:21 verbatim. No marker.

Col 0342A — 1 Cor 2:9

Nec enim oculus vidit … quae praeparavit Deus diligentibus se; Vulg. Quod oculus non vidit … iis qui diligunt illum. Same sense. No [var:]. hordaceos (for hordeaceos elsewhere) is on the plate; attested spelling, rendered normally.

Col 0342B–D — lemmata recumbere / Recubuerunt / gratias agens / recumbentibus

Vulg. discumbere / Discubuerunt / cum gratias egisset / discumbentibus. Synonymous; no [var:].

Col 0343A — [var:] ne quid pereat

Printed Colligite, quae superaverunt, fragmenta, ne quid pereat; Vulg. ne pereant. Fired because the gloss turns on quid twice (ne quid ex ipsis intellectibus … pereat; ne quid ex eis pereat, hoc est, ne aliquid ex eis remaneat). saturati for Vulg. impleti: same sense, noted.

Col 0343B — lemma Colligebant … qui superaverant manducantibus

Vulg. Collegerunt … quae superfuerunt his qui manducaverant. Same sense. No marker. intellectus … quas (gender): Pattern 9, no English exponent.

Col 0343D — in quo lex pendunt et prophetae

Plural verb with the second subject postponed; English "on which hang the law and the prophets" carries it without repair. Pattern 9 class; logged.

Col 0344B — [var:] qui venit in mundum

Printed Quia ipse est vere propheta, qui venit in mundum (twice); Vulg. Quia hic est vere propheta, qui venturus est in mundum. Fired on the tense ("who cometh" against "who is to come"), the same venit / venturus est pair Eriugena himself weighs at 0299A. fecit against Vulg. fecerat not marked. At the plate the c of fecit is a broken sort on both copies (fe it); the twin's fecit stands, no patch.

Col 0344C — Mark 6:43

tulerunt fragmentorum duodecim cophinos plenos, et a piscibus; Vulg. Et sustulerunt reliquias, fragmentorum … et de piscibus. The argument turns on the absolute et a piscibus, which de piscibus shares in sense. No [var:]. non XII, sed XXIIII keeps the printed numerals.

Col 0345B — Ex 23:19 / Ps 113:4

Both match (exultaverunt spelling). No marker. teste Augustino: identification not supplied.

Col 0345C — Jam est, qui … [non] potest ascendere

Floss's bracket [non] supplies the negative the codex omits (his VL 1, non om. cod.). Carried as "he can[not] ascend", brackets kept, per the 0009 precedent ([me]). The negative is rendered (7a). Jam est, qui rendered "Now there is one who".

Col 0345D — Omnis quippe caro foenum, et omnis gloria ejus flos foeni

Closer to 1 Pt 1:24 (flos foeni) than Is 40:6 (flos agri), without ut / tamquam. Same sense; the foenum link is kept either way. No marker.

Col 0346A — [var:] reversus in montem ipse solus

Printed reversus ("having returned"); Vulg. John 6:15 fugit iterum in montem ipse solus. Fired: the gloss builds the topography on the printed verb (solum iterum in montem rediisse).

Col 0346A — tradit discipulis suis, magistris suis, ministris suis

Rendered "to his disciples, his masters, his ministers", as printed (cf. magistri veritatis, "masters of truth", 0342B).

Col 0346B — legatur liber Geneseos … transitus … per mare rubrum

The crossing of the Red Sea is in Exodus; the plate (both copies) prints Geneseos. Rendered "the book of Genesis" as printed. An author's or codex slip, not a printing defect; no marker.

Col 0346C — the lacuna

quinariis conveniunt² and Floss's VL 2 Una linea deest. ("one line is missing"), then a dot run. Latin-only; the English carries the dots exactly as the twin has them.

Col 0346C–D — Gal 4:22, 24

Col 0347A — [cj:] allegoria facti, non autem dicti ⚑ FOR A HUMAN

RULED by Wilson 2026-09-17: the [cj:] stands (style file E13, transpositions settled by the author's own text).

The plate (both copies) prints In symbolis itaque, hoc est in dictionibus spiritualis doctrinae, quas sola allegoria facti, non autem dicti, tradit: symbols are handed down "by the allegory of deed alone, not of word". Eriugena's own definition, three times in these columns, is the reverse: allegoria dicti, non autem facti appellatur (0345A), allegoria sola dicti, non autem facti et dicti (0345B), sola spiritualis doctrina allegorice dicti, non autem secundum historiam facti (0346D), and the very next sentence says Solus enim intellectus in eo cogitatur, nullum autem factum. The faithful English asserts the opposite of the distinction the whole passage builds, with the negation bound to the wrong member. Rendered literally, glossed additively: [cj: facti, non autem dicti; read dicti, non autem facti, "of word, but not of deed"]. This is a transposition, at the edge of the Pattern 18 class (negation / correlative misbound); a human should confirm the marker rather than a crux alone.

Col 0347A — accipiam]us (twin) / accipiamus (plate)

English "that we may take". Patch filed.

Col 0347B — investigatur cerebrum (?)

Floss prints his own query (?) after cerebrum; carried verbatim, like Migne's own ( sic ) (Pattern 12). Rendered literally, "its brain (?) is searched out"; the sense is presumably "its kernel / inner substance" (cf. medulla, 0341C), not supplied. No marker.

Col 0347B — quoddam fragmentum est, quibus carnalis illorum cogitatio satiatur

Singular fragmentum with plural quibus; "by which" has no number exponent. Logged, no marker.

Col 0348B — ea lemque (twin) / eademque (plate)

English "the one and the same theology". Patch filed.

Anchor positions
