These are the edition's working notes, published as they were written. They record, work by work, where Migne's plate is defective or the reading uncertain: the printed form, what the English does with it, and why. They are not a groomed apparatus. Where a note argues with itself, withdraws an earlier decision, or leaves a question open, that is the record of how the reading was actually reached, and it is left standing — a conjecture that is visible can be checked, and one that has been tidied away cannot.
The English never silently repairs the page. A construable but wrong reading is rendered literally and the conjecture is recorded here, never applied to the text. How the English is produced and checked →

Merge (2026-09-24)
- Foot notes: none, checked at the plate. The whole work was read; pages 317–319 carry no foot notes. Coverage
full. - TEI patch: one, epitolam → epistolam (0623C), applied.
- Blind read (R7). Applied: ab uno nostro manuscripto is "by our manuscript alone" (one Lucca codex, not several); laudentur is "cited", not "praised"; canon VII's "perhaps bishops was written" (Coustant's guess at the original, not a claim about the codex). Logged, no change to the English: Labeum at 0625D is Migne's spelling (plate p. 318, apud Labeum), rendered "Labbe" because the identity is certain. Rejected as a marker: canon VII inergumeno (0628B), printed iner-|gumeno at a line break on p. 319, an attested variant of energumeno (Pattern 9).
Every page in range was opened at the plate once (raw/scans/pl020/pl020.pdf, 300 dpi full width, corners read first: 317 = 623/624, 318 = 625/626, 319 = 627/628). Text collated in the same visit. No foot notes on any of the three pages for this work (confirming the sweep's zero at the plate); nothing to place.
Standing decisions
- Heads: MONITUM → NOTICE; DISSSERTATIO (so printed, three s's, Migne's) → DISSERTATION (Pattern 9, section labels normalize; the Latin column keeps the misprint); OBSERVATIO PHILLIPPI LABBEI → OBSERVATION OF PHILIPPE LABBE.
- Migne's own
( sic )after canons XIX, XXI, XXII and the head IV is reproduced verbatim; no[sic:]of ours stacked on it (runbook false positive 5). The words he flags are carried: renovo (XIX), Paulianeste (XXI, i.e. the Paulianists, fused with the next word in the codex). XXII's accusative Diaconessas as subject has no English exponent; rendered "Deaconesses". - The Nicene epitome and the synopses are telegraphic by design (Coustant calls the Decentius synopsis plane barbara); the English keeps the jussive shape and does not complete the canons.
Plate readings that differ from our TEI (patch filed in data/briefs/7089-7091-PENDING-TEI-PATCHES.md)
- 0623C TEI
epitolam— plateepistolam. Rendered "letter".
Cruces
- 0623 (Nicene canon II)
non tacito promoveatur in clero: tacito is printed (plate read); rendered "tacitly". The Nicene canon (2) forbids promoting a neophyte quickly; tacito may be a slip for cito. Not marked (a real form, and the English asserts nothing the canon denies outright). - 0624C (canon V)
propter diversorum querimonia: querimonia as printed (nominative/neuter-plural form after propter); rendered "the complaint of divers persons". - 0625A (canon XIV) asyndeton
acceperit communionem, supervixeritkept: "has received communion, has survived". - 0627A
Hispanos detrahet de militia saeculari celeri ad sacerdotium non ordinantes: does not construe (celeri has nothing to agree with; ordinantes has no subject). Rendered word for word; the sense of Innocent's letter (Ep. III to the Toledo bishops) is that men should not be ordained swiftly from secular service. - 0628B (canon VI)
presbyter missae teneat: missae is printed (plate read), plural beside the singular verb; rendered "masses". The companion canon V has missam. - 0628B (canon VII)
vel aliirendered "others also" (not "or others": there is no first term). - 0628C Labbe's Observatio announces "the following canons", but none follow in this work: the TEI ends here, and so does 7089 on the plate (p. 319 ends with the rule and the next work's title). Not a loss.
